“Hey, you try getting three babies to sleep at the same time. All they do is eat, shit, and sleep. And it’s never at the same time. Besides, Sarah was hungry from breast feeding. So I made her a midnight snack.”

Just then, the fire alarms started blaring in the clubhouse, right before I heard Jessica scream, “FIRE!”

“Eugene?” I gasped, my body shaking. I didn’t know what was going on, but my gut was telling me it was bad.

Really fucking bad.

“Shug, listen to me,” I vaguely heard Eugene say when the sound of gunfire echoed outside.

Someone was shooting a gun.

“Baby, I need you to hide. I have to help my brothers.”

My eyes widened in fear.

“He’s here. He’s come for me.”

“No, baby, it’s not him. It’s a rival club. Satan’s Angels are no joke, but you are safe here.”

“Stay with me.”

I could see the worry, the indecision in Eugene’s eyes. Torn between helping his brothers and protecting me. I realized I just put him in an awful spot. Logically, I knew he needed to help them and know that I was safe, but my fear rode me hard. I couldn’t let him go. I needed him to stay with me.

Grabbing me, he hugged me tight to him, before cupping my face again, quickly kissing my lips. “Shug, I have to help them. Please understand.”

I did understand.

If my family or my boys were in danger, I would move heaven and hell to get to them. He needed to protect his family.

“Come back to me.”

“Always,” he whispered, right before taking my lips in a searing, toe-curling kiss that left no doubt about his true feelings.

My best friend was in love with me.

Truly and irrevocably in love with me. Watching him rush out of the room opened a chasm deep in my heart. For the first time since I’d known Eugene, a fear unlike anything I’ve ever known took root.

It was at that precise moment that I knew.

Eugene Michael James was my soulmate.

Minutes turned into hours, and before I knew it, the sun had risen and still no Eugene. The longer he was gone, the more worried I became.

I did what he told me and hid under his bed, but my nerves got the better of me and I had to see what was going on. Only I didn’t make it far, because the second I opened his bedroom door, I came face-to-face with Scribe’s sister, Phoebe.

“He’s okay,” she whispered, pushing me back into the room, quietly shutting the door behind her.

“Where is he? What happened?”

“Sit down, Sugar, and I will tell you everything,” the sweet woman said, handing me a brown paper bag and a bottle of water. “It’s not much, but I didn’t want the others to ask questions.”

Taking a seat on Eugene’s bed, I muttered, “Thank you.”

Phoebe pulled over the chair Eugene had in the corner and sat down while I opened the bag. I was starving. Taking out the sandwich, a small bag of chips, and an apple, I smiled. “How did you know I liked ham and cheese?”

Phoebe smirked, shrugging her shoulders. “Just knew.”

Taking a bite of the wonderful sandwich, I moaned, “This is so good.”
