Hearing the door shut, I wiped the lone tear from my eye while I stared out into the backyard of the clubhouse.

All this mess is because of me.

I missed my boys, my home, my shop. Worried about Eugene, I wanted to go to him, but knew I couldn’t. Maybe that was for the best, anyway, considering his revelation before he left. I really hadn’t stopped thinking about what he said.

He loved me.

He truly loved me.

Me.

The tramp of Rosewood.

Later that night, someone knocked on the door. Before I could answer, Pyro stuck his head in. “Sugar, King wants to see you.”

I knew this was coming.

Nodding, I got up and followed Pyro down the back stairs of the clubhouse. I got it. He didn’t want anyone else to see that I was here. I’d already brought enough trouble to the clubhouse. No sense in bringing more.

Pyro stopped before a door, knocked twice, then opened it, allowing me to walk past. Seeing King sitting at his desk, I took a few more steps, then stopped.

“You can sit down, Sugar. You are not in trouble.”

“I’d rather just stand here.”

King looked up from his desk and frowned.

“You okay, Sugar?”

“I’m fine. What do you need?”

“Wanted to give you an update on Enigma and your ex.”

“I’m listening.”

Cocking his head, his brows furrowed as he spoke, “Sheriff Brewer has a lead on Stanley. A police officer spotted the stolen vehicle in the next county over. They gave chase, but Stanley got away.”

“So, he’s still at large.”

“Yes,” King muttered. “Sugar, are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’m fine. What else?”

“You’ll be happy to know that Enigma is fine. Docs will be releasing him tomorrow. I was wondering until he was back on his feet if you would watch over him.”

“Sure. Anything else?”

King slowly shook his head. “No. That was all.”

Turning to leave, King spoke, “Sugar, whatever is bothering you, you know you can talk to me, right? Everyone here cares about you. We are just trying to help.”

“I know that, King, and I really appreciate it.”

“Then tell me what’s wrong.”

“It doesn’t matter,” I whispered, before leaving his office, heading towards the main room when I heard Frank say, “I promise you’ll get your dream wedding, Lidi.”

“Don’t you see, Frank? None of those things matter. I thought they did, but you and Charlie are all I really need.”
