“Ha! You guys missed me, and you know it.”

“Like a sore tooth,” Pyro grumbled, pointing his finger at us. “Whatever you three idiots are planning, don’t. This club has enough drama already. So, whatever you morons have up your sleeve, forget about it.”

“You hear that, Enigma?” Banks huffed, crossing his arms over his chest. “Our SA doesn’t trust us.”

Smirking, I nodded. “Yep. That’s what I heard.”

“Me too,” Hawk added when I spotted Sugar heading inside the clubhouse in a hurry. Frowning, I walked away from my brothers, knowing Hawk and Banks could handle Pyro and Scribe.

I found Sugar upstairs in my room, packing.

Leaning against the doorjamb, I asked, “Where ya going, Shug?”

“Home.”

“Why?”

“I can’t stay here anymore. I’m sorry, Eugene, but I can’t do this.”

And there it was.

Since seeing Martha Cohen in town, I knew it was only a matter of time before Sugar reverted back to her safe place. I knew Martha had rattled her. She hadn’t been the same since we saw the cranky old bitch, but I thought she would have at least talked to me about it first.

Stepping into the room, I closed my door and asked, “Do what?”

“You already know.”

“No, I don’t. I’m gonna need you to explain it to me. I know Martha upset you, but this isn’t like you, Shug. You know you’re still in danger. The woman I know would never put herself in harm’s way, so why don’t you tell me what’s really going on here?”

“I’m tired. I want to go home.”

“You are home.”

Sugar shook her head. “No. This isn’t home. I’m not comfortable here.”

“Then I’ll pack a bag and we can stay at your place.”

“No. You need to stay here.”

She was hiding something. Narrowing my eyes, I took a step forward and really looked at her. She was panicking. Her breathing had increased. Her hands were shaking.

Something happened.

“Did someone here say something?”

“No. I just need to leave.”

“Someone call you?”

Shug shook her head, zipping up the small bag of her belongings, before reaching for her purse. “I’m sorry, Eugene. I told you this wasn’t going to last.”

“You’re lying to me.”

“It doesn’t matter. I’m leaving.”

“Who called you?”

“No one called.”
