“Would you?”

“Fuck no.” My president chuckled when the doors closed.

Moments later, the elevator doors opened, and the second I walked out, my sister tackled me.

Thank God, King and Scribe were behind me because I damn near fell to the floor. And considering my sister was pregnant, I really wasn’t in the mood to face off with Frank, who stood glaring at me, frowning.

“Eugene!” Lidi cried. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, Sis. Take me to Shug.”

Lidi released me and nodded as she wiped a tear from her face. Taking my hand, she led me down the hall, where I saw Ace Franks and Jonathon Savage standing guard at the door. Entering the room, I spotted Gunner sitting beside her bed, holding her hand, looking sick to his stomach. Upon seeing me, he firmly said, “Fucker hurt her bad this time, Enigma.”

“I know,” I whispered, moving closer to the bed to get a good look at the love of my life. If I wasn’t holding onto my sister, I would have collapsed to the floor.

That motherfucker had decimated her.

Her beautiful face was black and blue. Her hair matted with blood as a ventilator breathed for her. Her tiny, dainty hands matched her beautiful face. I knew if I removed the sheet covering her, I would see more of the same.

“Lidi?” I barely whispered the word, unable to take my eyes off her. “How bad, this time?”

“It’s bad, Eugene. Several broken ribs and a broken wrist. She was bleeding internally when the paramedics brought her in. George told me he had to remove her spleen and sew up her liver. During surgery, her lung collapsed. That’s why she’s on a ventilator. Eugene, I had to do a DNC.”

“What’s that?”

“Sugar was pregnant.”

I rounded on my sister; unsure I heard her correctly. “That’s impossible. Sugar can’t have any more kids. Her tubes are tied. You did the damn surgery after Sean was born.”

Lidi nodded in agreement. “Yes, I did. I clipped her tubes, Eugene. There is a difference. I talked Sugar into that, instead of cutting and tying them, in case she changed her mind in the future. However, it seems one of the clips didn’t hold. She was only a few weeks along.”

“What are you saying, Lidi?”

“I’m so sorry, Eugene. Sugar lost the baby. The beating John inflicted was too severe. There was nothing I could do.”

“She was carrying my baby?” I said, stunned, looking at Shug. “I was gonna be a dad?”

In the days that followed, I never left Shug’s bedside.

Even when Mr. and Mrs. Potter arrived early the next morning with Benny and Sean. Seeing the boys, I crumbled before them, tears streaming down my face as they ran toward me.

Hugging them both, Mr. Potter walked over to me.

“Eugene, look at me, son.”

Looking up at the man, he extended his hand.

Taking it, he said, “Thank you for protecting my daughter, son.”

“I didn’t. He still got to her.”

“She’s alive because of you.”

Nodding, he released my hand, while Sean climbed up into my lap and Benny stood next to me. “It was him, wasn’t it, Enigma?”

Wrapping an arm around him, I kissed his forehead. “Yeah, buddy. It was.”

“He dead now?”
