She was mine.

We were one.

Forever.

Chapter Twenty-Four

King

Sitting in the dark, I watched as the sun rose over the Shenandoah Valley, and, for the first time in my life, I was ashamed of where I came from. My whole life, I’d loved everything about Rosewood and its residents, but after seeing and hearing how this town treated one of their own, my stomach curdled. All because my town chose to believe a hateful, spiteful woman.

I still didn’t know why Jane Stanley had a hard-on for Sugar, but I knew one thing. I was going to fucking end it.

“You know what you need to do, King. Just do it.”

Turning, I sighed as my woman walked over and sat on my desk. God, she was more beautiful than when I first laid eyes on her. Her stomach slightly rounded with my baby girl in her. I never imagined I’d get the chance to be a father. Then one letter changed everything. Now all my dreams were coming true.

“I do this… I could make it worse.”

“Worse than what?” Bailey clipped. “Sugar is the one who’s suffered the brunt of everything. You think I give a fuck about your past? I don’t. What I care about is your silence hurting someone innocent. Enough of this shit, Callum. Either you stand up and set the record straight or I will.”

Reaching for her, I pulled her into my arms, holding her close to me as I kissed her neck. “Did I tell you today how much I love you?”

“No.” Bailey chuckled. “But you can show me later.”

“Oh, I plan on it, Cupcake.”

“King?”

Looking up, I stared at my brothers, Gunner and Scribe. Both men looked like they didn’t sleep at all last night. Of course, I didn’t blame them. I hadn’t slept either.

“You two are up early.”

“Couldn’t sleep,” Scribe muttered, taking a seat on the small sofa, resting his elbows on his knees. “We gotta fix this. Henley is upset. She cried herself to sleep last night.”

“Sarah too,” Gunner added.

“Was just talking to my woman about it.”

“The way I see it, the only way to fix this is to come clean and tell the town the truth, but I fear if we do that, it will create a whole new set of problems,” Scribe explained.

“Even if the both of you stood in the middle of the town square and shouted the truth, this town is still going to blame Sugar,” Gunner advised. “The only way to end this is to spread our own rumor, so this town sees that Jane Stanley isn’t what she seems. That her shit stinks just like everyone else’s. Make an example of her. Publicly.”

“We do that and then we’re no better than her, Gunner,” Bailey stated. “As much as I agree that bitch deserves what she gets, lowering ourselves to her level isn’t the way to do it.”

Gunner and Scribe both stared open-mouthed at my woman.

“Who are you and what have you done with my bestie?” Scribe asked. “Payback’s a bitch, is your middle name, woman. You live for this shit.”

My woman shrugged, rubbing her growing belly. “Must be this kid King infected me with. But you know I’m right. What we need to do is give this bitch a taste of her own medicine, misfit style.”

“What do you have in mind, Cupcake?”

My woman grinned evilly as she laid out everything in great detail.

“Beth, can I get another strawberry smoothie?” Bailey shouted across the coffee shop, ignoring the looks of annoyance from the paying customers. Mainly Jane, who was seated with members of the town council, who were having a meeting while eating lunch.

The woman looked nothing like I remembered. In fact, I was having a hard time trying to remember her at all. I mean, I knew of her, but not personally. The bitch was a few years younger than me, and from what I could see, she wasn’t much to look at.
