“Let’s look at Sugar’s Creamery. Owned and operated by Sugar Potter. The building was once owned by Clementine Potter before she passed and gave the business to her granddaughter. But she doesn’t really own it, does she? In fact, according to bank documents, the business is owned by Eugene James, a known member of your gang. Also, Ms. Potter’s own home recently burned to the ground where gasoline was discovered as the cause. Was that drug related or was Mr. James trying to cover for his gang?”

“King?” I growled low and deep, trying hard to tamp down my anger.

“Then there was the cocaine found at several businesses owned and operated by the Sons of Hell or people associated with your gang. Not to mention the pound of meth that was found at Venom’s Ink, owned by your own wife, who is the granddaughter of a known meth dealer in West Virginia. Now, while this town has tolerated your kind for years, this council can no longer stand by and do nothing while you and your gang try to tarnish our lovely community. What do you have to say about the charges brought up against you?”

King grinned as he leaned back in his chair and glared at the vile woman. “Oh, I have a lot to say. For starters, let’s begin with the drugs found at my wife’s tattoo shop. How did you know the local police found a pound of meth? That wasn’t public knowledge or in any of the reports? Judge Tomlinson placed a gag order on the investigation.”

Scribe’s head snapped up, eyes wide as he whipped around and looked at King, who continued to smile.

Mike Brewer, the town sheriff, frowned as he stiffened, standing up straighter, listening intently.

Judge Tomlinson glared at Jane, who was now fidgeting in her seat.

“As for the fire that destroyed Sugar’s house, the fire chief hasn’t revealed the cause, yet you already know what incendiary was used. Gasoline, you said. Then there are the bank documents regarding ownership of Sugar’s Creamery, which are private and not public knowledge. So, tell me, Jane, how did you know what drugs were found or how my brother owned Sugar’s business and house?”

“We are not here to discuss me, Mr. Montclair. We are here to decide if your gang is a detriment to this town.”

“Actually, Jane. I would like to know how you know that information,” Judge Tomlinson asked sternly. “Because King is right. I put the gag order in place myself after your brother was killed. The only people who knew anything about the investigation were the sheriff, myself, the DA, and King.”

“You know this town, Judge. Rumors spread fast.”

“You would know all about that, wouldn’t you?” my woman snarled, getting to her feet as the hall turned deathly silent.

No one moved.

Not even me, as I watched my woman finally find the backbone and the courage to stand up to her tormentor.

“If you have a problem with me, Jane, that’s fine. I can handle it. I have been dealing with your shit since I was eighteen years old, but going after my friends and family, I won’t allow that. For as long as I can remember, you’ve made it your mission to destroy me. Why? Because I married your brother? Trust me, he wasn’t worth the effort. The man was a mean drunk who enjoyed beating his wife, but you already knew that and did nothing to help. Even when I came to you for help after he went after Ben. Your own nephew. You told me I’d made my bed and I could lie in it. Well, I did, Jane. For years, I endured everything your brother dished out until I finally found the courage to file charges against him.”

“He was innocent.”

“He tried to kill me!” Sugar screamed.

“Get the boys out of here,” I heard King say to Banks and Hawk, who moved quickly, picking up Sean and escorting Cameron and Ben out of the hall.

Standing up, I tried to hold her, but Sugar shrugged me off then started walking toward Jane.

Nothing was going to stop my woman now that she gotten started.

She had finally hit her limit.

“You knew. You saw what he did to me, and you still defended him. And when the prison released him, it was you who helped him. Wasn’t it?”

“Of course I did. He was my brother.”

“You evil, vindictive cunt!” Sugar yelled. “What the hell did I ever do to you? What? I deserve to know!”

“You never saw me!” the vile bitch shouted, slamming her hand down on the table as she shot to her feet. “You never looked at me. Only him. You could have had me. I would have given you anything. The world, but you never gave me a chance. It was always going to be him, and now you are going to marry him! The whore of Rosewood.”

What the hell?

I couldn’t have heard Jane correctly because it sounded like all this fucked-up mess was because she was in love with Sugar.

Holy shit. Jane wasn’t in love with Margaret. She was in love with Sugar. And because she couldn’t get what she wanted, she took her anger and frustration out on those around her. Those closest to her. But when her own brother married the woman she loved, she lost her shit, because that’s when the rumors really picked up.

Jane Stanley was nothing but a scorned woman.

Moving to stand behind my woman, Sugar laughed. “Oh God. This is fucking priceless. You were in love with me, and because I didn’t give you the time of day, you treated me like shit for years.”
