“I had to hide, but I overheard Jack talking to them. He said that he can’t shake this feeling about me.”

“Based on how you two left things at that pool party, I can’t blame him,” Brandi said.

“He also admitted that he was the one who carried me out of the burning house. He was lying when he said Liam did it.”

Brandi shivered and returned to her stack of papers. “Can we not talk about that fire? I’m still freaked out that you almost died. Jack has feelings for you. What are you going to do about it?”

“Nothing,” I said. “What is there for me to do?”

“You could tell him that you have feelings for him!”

“My feelings are complicated. I don’t really know what Jack means to me, except that he infuriates me half the time.”

“Which is exactly how Jack feels about you. So you’re on even ground.”

“It doesn’t matter, Brandi. I’m going back to New York soon.” I swept my hand around the room. “As soon as this is all taken care of, although right now it feels endless. Why would I say anything to Jack when my time here has an expiration date?”

She jabbed a finger in my direction. “That didn’t stop you from hooking up with Liam and Mateo.”

“It’s a totally different situation,” I argued. “I have baggage with Jack. I don’t with the two of them. We’re just having some adult fun, no strings attached.”

Brandi’s eyebrow rose.

“What?” I demanded.

“You’re not the kind of woman who can have a physical relationship without getting attached.”

“I’ve never tried before. This is a good opportunity to do exactly that.”

“And if you fly home and realize you have feelings for one of these hunky Florida firemen?” she demanded.

“I’ll mope around for a few days, then move on with my life.”

“Sure you will,” she said skeptically.

“I’m putting my headphones back on now,” I threatened. “The sooner we finish all of this, the sooner we can both leave town.”

It was dark by the time we left the store. We split a bottle of wine when we got home, and I shared some of the sultry details of the threesome with Brandi. Kyle called her after dinner, and she excitedly answered the phone and ran into the bedroom.

Not sure what else to do with myself, I put on Alien: Resurrection. While the opening scenes played, I texted Mateo.

Me: Are we still up for surfing tomorrow? You don’t have your next shift until tomorrow evening, right?

Mateo: Unfortunately, the conditions are not ideal. It would not be a good time to learn.

Mateo: We can try again in two days, if that is okay?

Me: Works for me! I’m excited to learn, even if I totally suck at it.

Mateo: I am sure you will be good! Especially with me as your teacher.

Mateo: I had a lot of fun last night.

Me: So did I :-)

Mateo: I hope we get the opportunity to do that again. With Liam, or perhaps just the two of us. I hope that is not too forward of me for suggesting.

Me: Not too forward at all. And yes, I hope so too! I’ll be in town at least another week, and maybe closer to two. I’ll need to fill my nights somehow.
