Which normally meant searching her out if she was working.

“Just a text from Lincoln.”

Hunter snorted. “Don’t let anyone else see you smile like that. All your staff will realize you aren’t a hard ass.”

“I doubt that,” she said, thinking of the encounter with Vivian. “What can I do for you?”

“The bride is nervous. She’s driving everyone crazy and Marissa came to get me. She couldn’t find you. The bride wants to ensure the food is set and the fresh fish arrived.”

“Sure,” she said. “I’ll come out and calm her. I’ll even put a smile on my face.”

“Put one on like you just got a text from your boyfriend,” Hunter said. “That will work.”

“Jerk,” she said.

She almost called him an asshole like she had Skyler on Monday, but while she was working, that was a no-no in her book. Hunter was still her boss.

Her brother though, the last thing she needed was him making Lincoln think that he might not be good enough. That he should be lucky to be with her.

She still was annoyed over that and vented to her mother.

Her mother had laughed and said that Skyler didn’t do anything different than he has with anyone else she’s dated and that if Skyler treated Lincoln differently, she’d be ticked about that too.

Her mother was right. There was no winning.

At least Lincoln didn’t seem upset over it when they’d gotten back to her place.

She followed Hunter out of the kitchen and into the wedding planner’s office. The bride was there with big rollers in her hair and not a lick of makeup on. She wanted to laugh but wouldn’t.

“I’m Grace Stone. I’m the head chef here and I can assure you the fish arrived this morning. We are getting ready to break it down for the dinner.”

“Can I see them?” the bride asked. She couldn’t remember her name and it didn’t matter.

She looked at Hunter who shrugged. “I can’t let you in the kitchen, but if you want to follow me toward it, I’ll bring one of them out for you to look over.”

“Yes, please,” the bride said, letting out a sigh. “My mother-in-law wanted the fish and she’s never going to let me live this down if it’s not here or fresh. Can I take a picture in case she complains? She always finds something to complain about, but I don’t want my mother to get wind of this after all the work and money they’ve put into my wedding.”

She wanted to be annoyed thinking this woman was a bridezilla but realized that she was just protecting her parents.

“We can do a selfie together if you’d like. Then she’d know the timing of it.”

“Perfect,” the bride said smiling. “Thank you.”

“No problem,” she said, then turned to Hunter. “See, nice.”

Hunter snorted. “Because you were thinking of Lincoln.”

She wouldn’t laugh. She couldn’t. Because there was part of her that knew Lincoln might be that protective of his mother too. So, yes, she was thinking of him.

MEANT EVERYTHING

Over a month later, Lincoln asked Egan, “Are you ready for this?”

“I’ve been ready for a year,” Egan said, adjusting his tie. “I hate these fuckers, but Blake said I had to wear one. At least it’s not a bow tie.”

Lincoln had never been in a tux before. A suit, sure. Dress whites, yes. But a tux...nope.
