I stopped moving.

Stopped everything.

Closed my eyes and focused on inhaling and exhaling until the urge to puke subsided, and I could think again.

I looked up and met Zotov’s broad back. He was staring out the window, hands in his pockets.

“What do you want from me?”

He turned around, and his cold, dark eyes, conveying nothing of his thoughts or emotions, met mine. Then he cupped his chin and tapped his finger against his jaw. He looked at me for a long time before he sighed, gave me a two-fingered salute, then sauntered to the door and rapped his knuckles against it.

“Hey,” I said.

He turned around. “Nothing, princess. I want absolutely nothing from you. See you tomorrow.”

He turned back and waited until someone from outside opened the door for him, then disappeared without a glance back. The door closed behind him, and I could hear the lock being engaged.

And I was alone again.

Alone and locked in.

Nothing, princess. I want absolutely nothing from you.

I scoffed.

Bullshit.

Everyone wanted something. Everyone had their own agenda.

See you tomorrow.

And marrying me tomorrow was on top of Zotov’s agenda. I slowly laid back down and turned sideways. That’s when I noticed the gun on my nightstand, right next to my phone.

Or not.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

The waiting was the worst.

I would take an impromptu shoot-out every day of the week instead of this.

As if my nerves hadn’t been shot, to begin with.

I took my phone from the countertop of the bar in Sanctum, the dim, sultry lighting casting a mysterious glow on the polished surface.

The scent of sex, sweat, and alcohol was nearly gone, wiped away by the cleaning crew that had left an hour ago.

I unlocked my phone and called the same number I’d called at least once a day, every day of the last four days. Ever since that unfortunate day that ended with Matt getting shot and Fee’s disappearance.

I groaned and rubbed my forehead. What a fucking nightmare. At least Matt had woken up and was on his way to health.

The call connected. “Alex.”

“Hawk.” My voice sounded hollow in the empty club. But since the cleaning crew had left, I’d been alone.

Alone and waiting for the Moretti delegation to arrive. Alone and waiting to see what my future would bring.

If I had one.
