The hospital room door opened again, but instead of Fee and Sophie, one of the security guards stepped in. “A Franco Moretti is here; he says he needs to talk to Alex.”

I nodded, stood, and followed him outside, where Fee and Sophie were huddled together, talking on the phone with Jemma.

I greeted Franco with a handshake and studied his somber expression.

Dread pooled in my gut. “What is it this time?”

Franco smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “The family has decided to name you the new Don of the Moretti clan.”

I furrowed my brow, taken aback by the sudden news. “That was quick.”

Though something didn’t add up. Franco didn’t look happy about it. “What’s the whole story?”

He hesitated for a moment. “We were approached by certain members of the Russian Bratva with a very interesting and lucrative proposition. With one condition.” He took a deep breath.

The little hairs on my neck stood as soon as he mentioned the Russians. “What’s the condition?”

“They will only deal with you as Don.”

I clenched my teeth. “Was it Ivan Zotov who approached the family?” I inquired.

Franco nodded. “I don’t know if it was him personally, but yes. The name Zotov was mentioned.”

I chuckled. Another player with an agenda who was moving through the world of organized crime as if it was a game of chess.

Maybe Zotov and Vince had a little strategy call before all of this unfolded.

World Domination 101. Who to marry, who to replace, who to conquer.

I didn’t like Zotov or his secret agenda any more than Vince’s, especially not when it involved me.

I refused to be a puppet—with someone else pulling the strings.

I would need to have a little heart-to-heart with Zotov before committing to anything.

Most importantly, I needed to talk to Fee first. She was my number one priority now, more important than any power being welcomed into the Moretti family would mean.

As if summoned by my thoughts, Fee appeared by my side, stepped forward, and hugged Franco. “Is everything okay?”

I exhaled harshly, then smiled and nodded. Her presence alone calmed my frayed nerves. She was the one thing keeping me grounded amidst the chaos. “Yes.” I nodded at Franco. “Thanks for telling me; We’ll be in touch.”

Franco nodded, kissed Fee’s cheek, then turned and left.

I grabbed Fee’s hand and pulled her back into the room.

Sophie was already by Gabe’s side, and my brother didn’t look too happy.

I groaned. What now?

Sophie looked at Fee, so I turned to my beautiful woman. “What?”

“As soon as Matt is ready for transport, we need to go to the US.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the determination in her voice. “Are you already dictating our life?”

She cocked her head and locked her eyes on me.

As if I could say no. I was a complete pushover for her—at least within reason. “I have a condition of my own,” I said.
