But behind me, Alex clucked his tongue as if I was a naughty child. “We’re doing no such thing. Bring her everything to try on.”

I stiffened, but he just took a step closer until his chest hit my back, and he squeezed my shoulders tighter. “Let’s get this party on the road,” he whispered into my ear, causing a shiver to run from the back of my neck all the way to the top of my head.

Not good.

“Let’s not.” I straightened my spine and took a step away from him until he was forced to let go of my shoulders.

“I need everyday clothes, T-shirts, shorts,” I said to the sales associate.

“A couple of sexy dresses,” he said.

I looked at him over my shoulder and rolled my eyes. What the?

“Nothing too fancy,” I added.

The sales associate nodded.

“Oh, and a bathing suit,” I said.

“Bikini.”

I turned all the way around to face him and put my hands on my hips. “Either you shut up or we leave.”

He took a step closer, then another, his face a stoney mask, barely containing the fire burning in his eyes. “Let me tell you something, princess,” he growled, causing goosebumps to erupt on my arms. “In case you mistook my easygoing-ness today with who I really am…”

I narrowed my eyes, but his dark, forceful eyes kept me captured, and I couldn’t look away.

“…I’m calling the shots here, and you better toe the line if you don’t want to walk out of here naked.” He raised one eyebrow. A challenge?

Fuck. See, total jerk.

I tore my eyes from his and looked to the door. I could leave right now—just walk out of here and deal with the consequences.

Though I’d better go straight to the hotel, check out and leave the island if I chose that path. And I’d just gotten my passport stolen, and my credit cards, and my phone.

Could I escape without them?

Probably not quickly enough.

I narrowed my eyes, focused back on Mr. Cocky and stared him down. “Fine, but I’m not some mannequin, and this is not a scene out of Pretty Woman.”

He couldn’t hide the smug expression on his face.

Well, he would learn that this was an exception, not the rule. Relenting to people holding power over me was not part of my DNA.

And he would learn that soon enough.

He motioned to the sales associates to go on. “And bring some sexy lingerie, as well,” he said, holding my gaze.

I stared back at him, and the scorching look he gave me caused my tongue to stick to the top of my mouth.

What the hell?

His confidence and dominance were magnetic; I could give him that, but it was also a stark reminder of the world he came from—a world of wealth, power, and danger. Where men decided everything and women were nothing more than arm candy, or a means to keep the family line going.

The same dark world I was born into but had never been happy in, had never truly belonged to.

Not even to my own family.
