“Now?” My brother’s voice was hoarse.

I looked at my watch. Fuck. It was 2 a.m.

It had been an hour since our call. Gabe and Sophie had probably fallen asleep, and here I was, selfish bastard that I was.

“What happened to breakfast tomorrow?” Gabe said.

I sighed. “Sure. Sorry.”

“Alex?”

“Yes.”

“What got you so pissed?”

I exhaled. Of course, my brother would realize I wouldn’t call him again just to chit-chat. “Nothing. Go back to sleep; we’ll talk tomorrow.”

I hung up, then called Matt.

“Alex.” He was awake and sharp as always. Matt never slept, or so it seemed.

“You busy?”

He hissed. “What’s wrong?”

I sighed. And here I thought I was one bad motherfucker when both my brother and my best friend knew something was wrong as soon as I opened my mouth. “Nothing. I just need to blow off some steam.”

Matt chuckled. “Meet you on the mats in ten.”

I pushed the button to the elevator.

Thanks to the elaborate system of underground tunnels between the nightclub, the hotel, and the casino, we had an elaborate hidden infrastructure, including our own private gym.

And rolling with Matt was exactly what I needed.

I arrived in record time, but he was already there, pounding his fists against the heavy bag with a rhythm that spoke of years of practice and a healthy dose of pent-up aggression.

Just what I needed.

Once I entered, he stopped and wiped the sweat off his forehead. Then he furrowed his brows and scrutinized me. “What did you do?”

I shook my head and pulled off my dress shirt, shoes, and socks.

The gym was usually my happy place where I could work through shit, where I could exhaust myself, and find balance.

And right now, I needed to find balance more than ever because even thinking about the sick fucks that had taken Fee, I was ready to fly back to Italy and destroy each and every one of them.

And I would.

I walked onto the mat. Matteo left the punching bag behind, pulled off his gloves, threw them to the side, and stepped directly in front of me.

We circled each other. He studied me, and I could feel his energy change. He knew me well enough to understand that this wouldn’t be a friendly match.

I didn’t have it in me.

“What happened?” he asked again, concern lining his voice.

I shook my head, not ready to discuss the situation. Not before I’d talked to Gabe, found out if he had further investigated the kidnapping and if he could tell me who I was going to kill, or if I needed to figure it out myself.
