He shook his head, then his gaze landed on Fee, and his face softened.

Holy fuck. What the hell was happening? Was Matt falling for Fee? Or was he just feeling overprotective of her? Or of me?

“I can take care of her.”

Matt nodded. “I know. Doesn’t mean I’m leaving.”

“Maybe she’s not comfortable with you here.”

“Maybe she’s not comfortable with you here, either.”

“Matt,” I growled, but my second-in-command folded his arms over his bulging chest, widened his stance, and shook his head. “Cut it. I’m not leaving.”

I narrowed my brows and glowered at him. Not that that would have any impact on the stubborn-as-a-mule asshat.

“Boys, stop fighting,” Fee whispered.

I stared down at her. I’d been so occupied in my pissing match with Matt that I hadn’t even noticed Fee was slowly coming back. Though she looked like she’d just done five rounds with a bull.

“I’m here, princess. What do you need?”

She chuckled. “Not having Groundhog Day over and over?”

I narrowed my eyes.

“I seem to end up emotionally damaged and in your arms with you carrying me to bed a lot. It’s like a very bad movie. With me as the pretty princess, of course, and you the ugly beast.”

She stared up at me with a mischievous half-grin and a twinkle in her eyes.

I couldn’t believe it. She’d bounced back.

Almost.

I could see the darkness, the sadness, the terror hovering just on the outside. She might’ve become a pro at pushing it all down.

At hiding it all.

But her walls were cracking, and the shadows were closing in and more threatening than ever.

“Don’t,” I growled.

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t pretend you’re okay. Don’t pretend as if any of this is okay. I’m sorry.” I sighed and hung my head.

Just yesterday, I had my hand between her legs, fingering her pussy without consent. I practically assaulted her when she had gone through unimaginable trauma. I was such an ass.

“For what? Rescuing me? Again?”

“For sexually assaulting you.”

I could hear Matt’s sharp intake of breath but kept my eyes on Fee.

“You didn’t know.”

I chuckled, a self-deprecating laugh. “I carried you out of there, remember? I knew…I should’ve known.”

She shrugged, then looked down at her lap.
