“Okay!” he says, crossing his arms over his chest. “I got it!”

“Tell.” I nod.

“I’ll need a street distraction. Police and rescue response. Think you can be a crazy person?”

I stare at him, confused. “What do you mean?”

“Lose your shit in public.”

I still don’t understand what he means.

“Grafton! Be you, like the real you, but in disguise, like a homeless person or a street vendor. Give them something to draw the eye, then have a mental breakdown. I need security to leave the desk to slip by them. Get all eyes on you.”

I get it now and laugh. “That I can do! Then what?”

“Talk to the officers and go voluntarily to the hospital. Once there, check yourself out and head back to the building. You’ll need to rid yourself of the disguise somewhere between the hospital and DuPont’s building. You’ll need another disguise to get into the building so you can pull the fire alarm to get everyone out of the building. Maintenance man or something.” He points directly at me as a clear warning. “You make sure Reese is out! I don’t give a shit about anyone else but her!”

This whole time he has kept it together, but the thought of Reese being close to danger is causing him to slowly break. I can see the bricks falling one by one, with his conflicting feelings breaking apart.

“Got it. Then what?”

“You get her to a safe place and wait for my call,” he instructs.

“Okay. What are you doing?” I ask. I need to know that we are both on the same page.

“I need to get a hold of a couple of files for my informant. He needs them to complete the SEC file that will bring charges against DuPont.” He takes a deep breath. “Then we watch the collapse of everything he built.”

I have to admit that I am giddy with excitement. This has ben a long time coming. “When? When do we do this?”

“Three days. Give us three days to map everything out. Go meet your sister for dinner tomorrow. Go out and see her face to face. She needs you.”

I run my hands over my face, and I have to agree. Adam is right. I need to be there for Reese. For the first time in my life, I can feel the weight being lifted off my shoulders. I can sit and let her cry on my shoulder.

“Alright, I’ll call her, then I am going to head to bed. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I stop myself before I leave the room. “Adam, are you okay?”

A frown on his face as he hangs his head. “I’m fine.” He quickly leaves the room and stomps down the hallway to slam his door behind him. The conversation is over.

I find myself downstairs in the basement, where my little slice of heaven sits. This plan we have feels solid. It’s so put together that I almost can’t handle how in order it makes me feel. I need my sister. I pick up my phone and call Reese. Her weak voice answers and my heart breaks at her pain.

“Hey…” she grumbles.

“Hey, how are ya?”

“Fan-fucking-tastic.” A perfectly made-up word.

“Want to spend the day together tomorrow?”

I can hear her shuffling around. I imagine her getting out from under her covers that are sprawled out on the floor in the living room.

“You mean it? You’re back?” Reese questions.

You can hear the hopefulness in her voice. “I’ll be back tomorrow. I am going to stay with a buddy of mine. He’s got a cabin outside of town. It’s nice, you need to see it. He thinks the fresh air and no people will help me adjust better to civilian life.”

I can hear more shuffling around. “Coffee first?”

“And chocolate chip croissants,” I add.

“Please!”
