“She covered it up,” Tia corrects her.

“Why would you cover that up? It’s beautiful. You should never try to hide who you are from the world. You bring a different kind of light that no one else has. You—”

“I don’t bring light. I snuff it out,” I scowl.

“Oh, hush. You do not! Why do you cover it?”

“Kaelin, that is none of our concern. She has her reasons. And doesn’t feel comfortable talking about them yet. We won’t share this with anyone either.” Kaelin nods in silent agreement while Tia opens the bottle, and a warm scent fills the air.

I can’t quite place the name of it, but it brings forth feelings I have long forgotten. Like cold nights sitting next to a comforting fire in an overstuffed chair. Or a warm hug. Neither one I have felt since… just another thing I cannot remember.

“Oh, Kaelin, this is perfect,” Tia gushes. “What’s the name of it?”

“I call it Lady of the Shadows,” she preens. “I had to mix a few to get it exactly right.”

“I like it,” I accidentally say out loud. But it is so low she couldn’t possibly have heard me.

“What was that?” Kaelin asks with a bright smile.

“Nothing,” I grumble.

“She likes it,” Tia laughs.

I don’t say another word as they scrub every inch of my skin, oil my head, and finally dye my hair the inky black I have become accustomed to. They talk and laugh around me as if I am not even here. I don’t mind, of course, I am used to being invisible. I prefer it. That is how I get the information I need. And one day, they will slip up and provide me with the weapons I need to take down the Prince.

Icomb through the tomes again, searching for something I’ve missed. These vines came out of nowhere, and on top of it, someone used Magik. There hasn’t been someone born with that ability since the Forgotten King. At least my father tried to make sure that there was no one left of that line.

Did he miss someone? Was there another line that he somehow overlooked? Someone my father brainwashed into doing his bidding?

Grabbing the tome with the family tree of the last known Magik line, I make my way up the tower. I need to feed the woman so that I can get back to work. I know I am close to an answer. If I could stay in my office long enough, I could finally free us from these vines and find my sister. Another reason I need to get her on our side so she can handle all the unruly Keryth while I figure this shit out.

I was naïve enough to believe that it would be easy. It’s clear from the fire in her beautiful blue eyes; she hates my kind more than I initially thought. It will be tricky, a challenge… but not impossible.

“Well, how did we do?” Tia asks as I enter the woman’s bedroom. I drag my eyes away from the names on the page, and the tome slips from my fingers.

Her smooth black hair shines in the dancing candlelight. Tia has dressed her in a fitting black dress that hugs her body deliciously. My mouth waters at the thought of kissing every inch of her pale skin and running my tongue along every scar that covers it. She is breathtaking. Especially with the glint of violence in her eyes aimed solely at me. Fuck, I love a challenge.

“Felix?” Tia breaks through my lust-filled haze and brings me back to reality.

“What?”

“How did we do?”

“Pretty girl…I mean…pretty…PRETTY GOOD!” DAMNIT!

Tia’s eyes widen as she looks between me and the stunning creature beside her. I can practically see the wheels turning in her head. Good. We already plan to work together to get her on our side, but by that smile on Tia’s face, she is also planning on helping me claim this woman as mine.

“I’ll see you later, Nyx. Eat your fill, and don’t worry about a thing. You are in excellent hands.” Tia squeezes her thin shoulder before heading for the door. “Come on, Kaelin.”

“But I want to—”

“Not now,” Tia reprimands her sister. Kaelin huffs in frustration and leaves with her.

I can’t take my eyes off of her. I haven’t craved someone’s blood in a very long time. The thought of feeding has been turning my stomach sour as of late. But this woman right here, Nyx, I believe Tia said her name is, has my mouth watering.

“Nyx,” I whisper, testing out the feel of her name on my tongue.

“Felix,” she says between her teeth.
