“No, it’s just…” I began.

“Tell me,” he insisted.

“It’s just that you have so much to give,” I said, feeling the heat rise in my cheeks. “And I have nothing.”

“That’s not true,” he replied.

“Isn’t it?” I countered, and he cleared his throat before he leveled me with a stern look.

“That is enough, sweetheart,” he admonished. “Do not ever speak of yourself like that again. You are beautiful, smart, kind, and incredibly generous. You have more to give than you realize.”

“You really think so?” I whispered, my disbelief more than apparent in my tone. I chewed my lip.

“I know so,” he said, his stance strong.

I was quiet for a moment, letting his words sink in.

“That’s not what’s really bothering you, is it?” he pressed, and I dipped my head, hiding my face.

“It’s just… I can’t… I don’t know if I can have children,” I answered.

“Is that all?” he asked.

“Yes,” I whispered, horrified that this simple fact would make him pull away from me and want to end this.

“Tell me about what you’ve been told,” he pressed gently, his voice warm and comforting.

“Well, there’s a cyst on my ovary. They told me I may never be able to conceive, or that even if I did, the risk would be great,” I began, but my voice tapered off towards the end, my worry that he would decide to put an end to us suddenly more than a little overwhelming.

The only person that knew about my condition was my best friend Zara. It was something neither of us ever talked about, and it was the last thing I thought I’d be talking about with Hunter tonight.

“Thank you for trusting me enough to share that with me, sweetheart. I appreciate you opening up to me. It’s not something that needs to be a worry of yours, not with me. Having you means the world to me. Maybe one day, if it’s something you want, we can talk about adopting one of the children from the orphanage. There’s plenty of children in need of a good home.”

“Do you really mean that?”

“Of course, sweetheart. You are the most important person in my life. Nothing else matters but that. Not one single thing. You could tell me the sky was falling, and all I would care about was that you were safe in my arms,” he explained, and I dropped my head.

Even though he was being remarkably sweet about it, I still couldn’t shake the feeling of being less than a whole woman.

He cleared his throat. “Put it out of your mind, my beautiful girl, before I make you put it out of your mind.”

“Yes, sir,” I mumbled, the flush of arousal creeping over my face and down my neck at the insinuation in his tone.

“Good girl,” he said, and I knew I had pleased him. “Now, reach beneath that pretty green dress, take off your panties, and hand them to me.”

My eyes went wide, and my heart rate kicked up a notch.

“We’re in a restaurant,” I protested. “You can’t be serious.”

“You’d better hurry before someone walks by,” he countered. “Your panties. Now.”

His stern, commanding tone made my core ache.

“But—” I tried once more.

“I don’t need to tell you what’s going to happen when we get home if you continue to disobey me. If need be, I can take you out to my car right now.”

I gulped. “You wouldn’t.”
