She shakes her head. “He wouldn’t tell me anything, either.”

Drew tells us to go sit at the table without him. I can hear him rummaging around as we take our seats.

“I’m starting to get a little worried,” says Bailey quietly.

Me too, but I don’t want to make her feel worse, so I take her hand. “I’m sure he’s just winding us up. What on earth could it possibly be?”

“He could be asking us to go back to our apartments,” she says, ticking off each item on her fingers. “Telling us both he wants to see other people. Telling me he only wants to be with you, and not with me after all.”

“You can’t be serious,” I say, actually shocked by the last one.

Bailey flushes. “It’s crossed my mind.”

“Andrew!”

“For crying out loud, I’m right here,” says Drew, wincing as he walks up right as I’m in the middle of shouting for him.

“Tell Bailey you’re not about to dump her so we can be a couple.”

Drew’s face goes blank with shock. Bailey groans and covers her face with her hands. Drew sets some papers down on the table and goes to his knees next to her chair. He pulls her hands away from her face, holding them tightly in his own.

“Never,” he says, forcing her to look at him. “Never. Do you hear me?”

“I know it’s stupid,” she says, squeezing her eyes shut.

“It’s not stupid,” I say.

“And I’ll tell you as many times as you need to hear it,” he says, nodding to include us both. “Both of you. I need you both.” He squeezes her hands again, lifting them to press a kiss to each one. “Okay?”

“Okay,” Bailey whispers. She reaches for me blindly; I catch her hand and wind our fingers together, squeezing.

“Right,” says Drew, standing up to take his seat. “So. I’ve asked you here today—quit snickering at me, Coop, I’m serious—I’ve asked you here today because I think there’s something we need to discuss.”

“Obviously,” I say, glancing at Bailey. I’m trying to lighten the mood, but I’m afraid she’s still not appeased. There’s a really excellent way to get around that—Bailey’s shit at being upset when she gets naked—but Drew’s adamant about talking about whatever this is.

“You know I love you both,” he says, waiting until he’s sure he has our attention. “And you know I respect you and I value your opinions.”

“Okay, now I’m starting to get scared,” I say. Drew presses on.

“So if you say no, we can still back out of this.” Drew taps on the papers on the table. He doesn’t say anything else.

A long moment passes.

“Back out of what?” Bailey finally prompts.

“Oh,” Drew jumps a little. “Yeah. Um. Here.” He pushes the papers at us.

Bailey reads faster than I do. She looks up at him almost immediately.

“Is this what I think it is?”

Drew rubs a hand over the back of his neck. “If you think it’s an offer for the house over on Melbourne Street then yes, it’s what you think it is.”

“You made an offer on a house?”

“It’s got five bedrooms,” says Drew defensively. “The owners are really motivated. It’s a great time to buy.”

The man looks positively terrified, so much so I can’t help but laugh. And once I start, I can’t seem to stop. Bailey catches my eye and starts laughing too.
