“Are you alright?” Lucas asked during a stop-off at the bar.

“Yes,” I nodded, requesting a glass of water from the bartender. “It’s a lot. But weirdly easy.”

“Right?” Lucas chuckled. “No one really cares.”

“Lucas!” Suddenly two sets of hands landed on Lucas’ shoulders, making me jump. Lucas turned and immediately exclaimed, then he pulled the two men into a large hug.

“Sebastian! Danny! I thought you two were skipping it this year?”

As Lucas spoke to his friend, I found myself eyeing both of them in surprise. Both men were insanely attractive. Sebastian was the tallest, dressed in a smart black suit that did nothing to hide the thickness of his arms or the broadness of his shoulders. His blond hair was slicked back, and he had the brightest blue eyes I had ever seen. His jaw was so square it surely could cut glass, and his smile, though small and tight, was genuine if the crinkle around his eyes were anything to go by.

The other man, Danny, was as tall as Lucas and had thick, black hair that curled across his head. His eyes were a deeper blue, and his thick box beard hid the strength of his jaw. He was dressed more relaxed in a dark silk shirt with white buttons and a pair of white slacks. They talked like they had known each other all their lives, and I quietly admired both of them until Lucas turned to me.

“This is Scarlett.”

Both men turned to me, and I froze as if dunked into a bucket of ice water. With alcohol in my system and three attractive men staring me down, it was hard not to feel a little daring, especially in this dress.

“Hi,” I smiled nervously, holding out my hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“You look delicious,” Danny grinned, firmly shaking my hand, and his tongue lingered at the corner of his mouth.

“Stunning,” Sebastian said, and instead of shaking my hand, he took it and slowly kissed my knuckles without breaking eye contact. It was so intense that my heart skipped up to my throat, and I lost all ability to speak.

“Didn’t I tell you?” Lucas grinned, sliding an arm around my waist. “Isn’t she beautiful?”

“You talked about me?” I asked, finally finding my voice again as my cheeks flared hotter by the second.

“Hard not to,” Lucas smirked, then his brilliant smile faded, and he sighed. “Sorry boys, I have a mother to appease.”

“No problem,” Danny smiled. “Catch you after?”

“Definitely.”

And just like that, I was whisked away from the handsome men. Unable to resist looking back, I was surprised and yet excited to see them both staring at me as they leaned on the bar.

“Your friends are attractive,” I said, leaning into Lucas as they walked.

“They’re as nice as they look, I promise,” Lucas smiled, but this smile was different. A nervous air had descended, and his grip was tighter. “Ready? I’m so sorry.”

“As I’ll ever be.”

“Mother!” Lucas stepped forward suddenly and embraced a tall, thin woman wearing a crisp white wrap-around dress. Despite her age, her figure was amazing, and her brown hair was piled on top of her head. Next to her stood a broad man who carried the similar boyish good looks that Lucas himself had.

“Lucas, I have been looking for you all evening,” the woman tutted.

“I’m sorry.” Lucas pressed one hand to the small of my back. “Mom, this is Scarlet. My fiancé.”

My heart froze and dropped like a rock.

Fiancé?!

That wasn’t what was agreed. Words were lost, and I could only hold out my hand in greeting, completely stunned.

“Nice to meet you dear,” his mother replied, and she clutched at my hand. “Aren’t you pretty?”

“Y-Yes, thank you,” I stammered, unable to even look at Lucas. I was certain that the moment I did, I would explode. “I’ve heard so much about you.”

“Really?” His mother pursed her lips. “We’ve heard nothing about you.”
