My grip is powerful enough that I could hold onto her forever, and she wouldn’t be able to do a damned thing about it. But I’m not here to cause a scene.
I already feel out of place.
“Let’s go home,” I grumble, letting go of Sonia’s wrist.
Immediately, she jumps away. Then, without another word, she turns and starts to storm off.
Shit.
I really shouldn’t follow after her, but my cowardly heart tugs after the bitter young woman I’ve reluctantly fallen for—even if every step makes me feel like more and more of a fool.
“Leave me alone or I’m going to call the campus cops,” Sonia threatens when I catch back up to her.
“You know I’d quarter those pigs in the blink of an eye.”
“I’m sure you would,” Sonia shrugs, not bothering to stop. She knows full well what I’m capable of. “But everybody would see. These college kids would make you famous. Then, your ugly mug would be plastered on every bulletin board and lamppost at this coddled university. You’d never be able to come back. How would you collect outstanding loans for your bosses then?”
She’s got a point. But I’m nothing if not stubborn. Reaching out, I take her wrist again, and we both come to a screeching halt. “They’re your bosses too,” I angrily remind her.
“Not for long,” Sonia sneers back. “Soon, I’ll be above that shit. Now, let me go! I don’t want to be a gutter rat for the rest of my life.”
She instantly gets one of her wishes.
My fingers go weak as she rips herself away from me one last time.
Fuck. I want to escape this life, too. But it’s not like I can fuck my way out of the mafia…
It doesn’t take long for Sonia to disappear into the crowd ahead.
Just like that, I’m all alone in an alien world.
My gut churns as I desperately scan my surroundings.
Did we make a scene?
The answer comes quickly enough. All of a sudden, I feel eyes on my back.
Instinctively, my hackles rise and I whip around… only to be greeted by a pretty little blonde who barely goes up to my shoulders.
“Hey there,” she lilts, her sharp cheekbones rising as she gives me a fluttering smile.
“Uh… hi,” I stumble, not quite sure what to expect.
This is a college girl. I’m not used to college girls.
And this one is cute as hell.
“Hey… so… uh, listen… what just happened there is none of my business,” she starts, her pretty pale cheeks flushing with the faintest pink blush. “But if you just broke up with your girlfriend… well, then I’m sorry… but it’s not the end of the world! You can come party at Kappa Alpha tonight. The frat there is hosting my sorority… it will be a good place to meet girls…”
Brushing aside a lock of her golden blonde hair, the college girl reaches behind the textbook that’s pressed against her stomach and pulls out a flyer.
“Everyone will be there,” she smiles, handing it to me. “… Including me.”
My heart starts to thump as I take the invitation from her.
Is this a trick? A trap?
She can’t actually believe that I belong anywhere near her or her college friends… right?
