She has a sensual, sexy air about her, but she screams innocence as well. At least, that’s the first impression that I get of her. Because I have met so many people in my life from so many different walks and with so much variation to them, I have developed a pretty good sense of people. My judgement is usually right. Usually, but not always. I can’t help but wonder if the damsel on distress on the side of the road has more layers to her. Of course, we are just ships passing in the night, I’m not sue that I am ever going to be able to get to know that about her, but I can’t stop myself from wondering about her all the same. She’s unique for sure…

Time passes and I dig around in the car, trying to see what I can find, but I have to admit that this is beyond my capabilities. I think that it might be dead to be honest, which I’m sure Kayla isn’t going to want to hear. I don’t particularly want to be the one to tell her because I’m not ready for a fresh set of tears.

“Shit.” All of a sudden, I hear Kayla’s biting tone. “Have you managed to fix the car because the tow truck won’t be here for hours. The asshole guy said that he can’t make it here despite my situation.”

Oh God. “I’m sorry, Kayla, but there isn’t anything that I can do about it. It’s dead, I think.”

Yep, there they are, the tears. “Oh no, this is awful. Thank you for your help, but this is a nightmare for me. I have to be at a job interview soon.” She checks her watch. “I’m already pushing it when it comes to time and I can’t be late. My mother set up the interview for me and she said that was one of the most important things. I have to be on time, or they won’t hire me and it’s really easy to get black listed in the law world. My mother will kill me if she put all of that in to my education and I don’t get a job at all. How will I repay her then?”

“You have to pay her back?” That must be a lot because college is surely expensive.

“No, not financially, it isn’t like that.” She shakes her head and sniffs. “But she wants me to be successful. She doesn’t want it all to be for nothing. She is an incredible lawyer as well, one of the best in the country, which means I have big shoes to fill. I don’t know if I can do it as it is. This will just make it worse.”

As I see the pressure filling this poor woman it just confirms why the rat race isn’t for me. I don’t see how this can be a fun life for anyone. Why worry about impressing other people in job interviews and meeting dead lines when the whole world is out there… but I know through my brothers that not many people agree with me and I can see this isn’t the time for me to even consider bringing that up to Kayla.

“So, you have to get to a job interview?” I check with her, wanting all of the details before I say anything else. “It’s important to you because you want to show your mother how capable you are and you need to pay her back for everything that she has done for you as well, but your car is dead and the tow truck won’t be here on time.” She nods slowly as she tries to work out where I am going with this. “So, why don’t I give you a ride? I can take you to your job interview and bring you back afterwards in time to pick up the car.”

She looks stunned to the core, like she can’t believe anyone would be so nice, which has me wondering what other people she has met before. I know that not everyone is great, of course, but I can’t be the only person who has ever come in to her life and offered to help her out. That seems utterly insane to me.

“You can’t do that.” She shakes her head hard. “I can’t ask you to do that for me. It’s too much. You have already done so much by just stopping here and offering to help me. I am so grateful to you already.”

“I’m offering.” I give her a one shouldered shrug. “I don’t see how else you are going to be able to make it. I wouldn’t offer to take you if I didn’t want to. It really isn’t any trouble to me.”

“But you must have somewhere that you need to be as well,” she insists. “You can’t just be driving…”
