“Actually, I am,” I interject before she can get too carried away with herself. “I have just left my job on a building site which I worked at for about a month and now I’m on to my next adventure. I have no idea where I’m going or where I will end up. So, yes, I am just driving down this road aimlessly. It isn’t out of the way to take you anywhere because I don’t have a particular destination in mind.”

I recognize the look that Kayla gives me well. I have it from my brothers all the time. It’s the look of someone who doesn’t understand my life at all. But that’s okay, I don’t mind, I don’t need her to understand.

“I would give you gas money,” she tells me immediately. “Of course I wouldn’t expect you to do it for free, but I know how time is important as well and I don’t like the idea of taking up yours.”

I extend my arms wide and grin. “I have all the time in the world. You don’t need to worry about that. Like I said to you, I have no plan, nowhere I need to be, nothing that I need to do at any time.”

As I watch the confusion flooding her face, I wish I hadn’t made the comment earlier about not speaking to strangers because now I might have her worried. That’s understandable because everyone should consider their safety, particularly women out on their own, but I really am no threat to anyone.

“I will take you to your interview now to make sure that you aren’t any later, and then I will wait for you so that I can bring you back to your car again. There won’t be any issues. It solves everything.”

Eventually, she doesn’t have any choice but to nod at me. I have seen the cogs ticking in her brain and she has finally realized that there is no other choice. Thank goodness because I want to help her.

“Hold on, let me grab my bag,” she says while leaning in to her car to grab it. “I need to fix my make up because I’m sure I look a fright. I can’t go in to a job interview with puffy make up covered eyes.”

To me, she looks fine. Beautiful in fact, I can’t see any faults with her face at all, but she isn’t dressing up for me. She’s trying to make herself look crisp for the professional world that I don’t understand at all, so I keep my lips tightly shut. There isn’t any point in me giving my unwanted opinion. I’m sure the mood that she’s in and the pressure that she is under, she would rip my head off if I even suggested it.

Eventually she nervously slides herself in to the passenger’s seat of my car. She looks uncomfortable, all stiff like she doesn’t know how to make her body react, but I’m hoping that by simply driving she will slowly start to calm down. I don’t think that there is anything in particular that I can say to make her feel better.

“Right, give me the address,” I say with a smile. “I will have to dust off my satellite navigation system for this. I never use it because I don’t have a destination in mind, but I’m glad that I have it now. It means that I can help you out and get you to that damn interview before there are any more disasters.”

She smiles and lets me know where we are going. It’s an area that I’m sure I haven’t visited before so that will be a bit of an adventure for me. Anywhere new can be exciting if you embrace it wholly which I intend to do even if I won’t be there for long. Just for Kayla’s job interview. At least, that’s the plan anyway. But as I know better than anyone, the best fun can come from the trips that aren’t planned, just like this one.

Once Kayla settles in enough, she slides down the passenger seat mirror and starts to do her make up. I do my best to keep my driving smooth to make it as easy as possible for her which I’m sure she appreciates. Every so often, I dart my eyes over to her to see how she’s getting on and I find myself smiling with joy. Even though she’s still a little sad, I’m just grateful that I managed to make her day that little bit easier. It’s a nice feeling to make someone’s day better, to act heroic. To be the one to save the day.

I wonder if Kayla will remember this day, if she will recall me in the future, and be glad that we met. I like the idea of touching someone in that way, even if it’s just for a moment.
