“You’re not the reason she’s gone,” I corrected immediately. “Sofia’s the reason she’s gone, and this time I’m going to make sure she’s properly punished for what’s she done. I should never have let her father convince me to be so lenient in the past. That was my first mistake.”

“That’s the second step,” Taylor replied. “After Jenna’s found. But right now all I can think of is—”

“I know,” I said. “That’s all I can think of too. Come home soon… please.”

“I’m sorry,” Taylor said. “For all of this.”

Before I could even respond, she had cut the line. I stared at my phone for a second, feeling terrible. I had absolutely no control over any of this, and it made me realize just how worthless money was at the end of the day. It was a paper shield that people believed held power, and that belief gave it life. But the truth was when you were starting at life and death situations, you realized how meaningless it all was.

I had worked so hard to provide the best of everything for Jenna. But now I realized that spending time with her was the most important thing. I went back into the living room where Jennifer was waiting for me. She was standing by the windows, looking out over the city. She cut a sad silhouette. I walked up to her and looked out onto the city that held my daughter.

“Don’t you think we should have heard something by now?” I asked. “Anything?”

“Hang in there,” Jennifer said bracingly. “It’s not yet time to panic.”

“When would be the time to panic?” I asked.

Jennifer put her hand on my shoulder. “Just pray.”

“I haven’t stopped since they told me Jenna was taken.”

“Good,” Jennifer said. “Prayers have power; sometimes they succeed where all else fails.”

“I sincerely hope that’s true,” I replied.
