“I don’t believe in coincidences,” Megan said immediately. “You and Reed were meant to meet. I know you’re freaked out about this, but I would say it’s a blessing in disguise.”

“How so?”

“This is the universe’s way of telling you that you have found the one,” Megan said. “I mean, usually when you meet a guy, you have no idea if he’s really a good guy or if you just think he’s a good guy. This is the best sign ever.”

“Best sign ever?” I repeated incredulously. “That we had the same abusive father.”

“He was not your biological father,” Megan pointed out. “It’s not like you and Reed are brother and sister or anything.”

“Aren’t we?”

“Um, unless you’re connected by blood or you’ve been raised together, no,” Megan said definitively. “You are not brother and sister.”

I smiled. “Thanks; that actually makes me feel better.”

“Logic usually does.”

I laughed at that one, but I sobered up almost immediately. “Do you see, though?” I said. “Do you see why I’m so worried? There are so many things standing between us.”

“I think that’s all just in your head,” Megan said. “I mean, the crazy ex may be a problem, but Reed is handling that, right?”

“Right.”

“So then there’s nothing to worry about,” Megan said. “Jenna I’m sure will be over the moon when she finds out you and her father are—”

“Careful,” I interrupted.

Megan smiled. “Are together,” she finished with a more PG alternate to the one she would have no doubt chosen to go with. “And as for the Brady thing, well that you might have to tell him at some point.”

My head snapped up. “You think?”

“Come on,” Megan said. “He’s going to be upset if he finds out and he knew you knew but you just chose not to tell him.”

“Again with the logic,” I said, shaking my head at Megan. “I would never have expected that of the two of us, you would be the more logical one.”

“I have my moments,” Megan said, fluttering her eyelashes dramatically.

I smiled and nodded. “Thanks for listening, Meg.”

“Anytime,” she said. “You should open up more often.”

“I’m trying.” I nodded. “It’s nice to talk things out every now and again.”

“So… what’s the deal? You here for the night or are you just doing a drive-by as usual.”

I smiled. “I’m staying the night today,” I said. “How about ice cream and a good old-fashioned chick-flick?”

“Sounds perfect.” Megan nodded. “I’ll queue up the movie, and you get the ice cream.”

“Do we have any?”

“Half a tub of mint chocolate chip and half a tub of caramel dulce de leche.”

“Nice,” I said, moving into the kitchen.

I was getting a couple of spoons out of the drawer when I noticed the mail lying on the countertop next to the stove. There was one addressed to me.

“I have mail?” I called to Megan.
