“Oh shit, yeah,” she replied. “Sorry, it arrived yesterday, but you weren’t in and I totally forgot to tell you.”

“That’s okay,” I said, turning it over. “It doesn’t look urgent.”

I ripped it open and pulled open a typed letter. My eyes flitted through the first sentence, and I froze in place, gripped with new panic.

“How about Sweet Home Alabama?” Meg asked. “You can’t go wrong with Reese Witherspoon.”

I barely registered that Megan was even speaking to me. My mind was reeling and I focused all my attention on the letter in my hands.

“You should know that you’re not special. You should know that you’re not pretty or smart or funny or interesting. You’re not going to hold his attention for long, bitch. I told you I was watching you. I told you to watch your back, but did you listen? No… you ignored my warning, and you decided to stay. This is not a joke, and I’m not playing with you. When I told you to watch your back, I meant it.

“You’re not right for him, you blonde whore. You might be a distraction, but that’s it. I’m going to mangle that face of yours so badly that he won’t be able to recognize you from Adam. This is your second and last warning. Stay away from him or you’ll be sorry. And that’s a promise.”

“Or would you prefer watching something a little more current?” Megan asked. “About Time, maybe… Rachel McAdams won me over with that movie.”

I couldn’t even open my mouth. My tongue felt like it had been glued to the back of my throat. I read through the letter again and realized that this meant that the stalker knew where I lived.

“Hello?” Megan said, waving a hand in my face. “Taylor? Are you all right?”

I blinked and turned to Megan. “I… don’t think so.”

“What is it?” Megan asked urgently.

“I opened the letter that came for me yesterday,” I said, pushing the letter into her hands.

She read it silently and I saw her eyes grow wider with every sentence she read. “Fucking hell,” she gasped, at the end of it. “This bitch is crazy.”

“And she knows where I live.”

“We need to call the police.”

“And tell them what?” I asked. “We don’t know who it is.”

“I thought you knew it was this Sofia person?”

“No, Reed suspects that it’s Sofia. We don’t know for sure and until we do, I don’t want to make accusations. Sofia’s father is a wealthy man, and wealthy men are very often influential men too.”

“Reed’s a wealthy man too,” Megan reminded me.

“I’m going to call Reed,” I said. “He’ll know what to do.”

I walked back into the living room and called Reed. The moment I heard his voice, I felt instantly better. It was almost cathartic to hear his deep baritone.

“Taylor?”

“Reed,” I said. “I got a letter…”

“A threatening letter?” Reed asked immediately.

“Yes,” I said. “How did you know?”

Reed sighed. “Because a letter was left for you here too. Someone really wanted to make sure you read it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want you to worry,” Reed admitted. “I’m sorry, I should have told you. I spoke to the private detective I hired; we’re going to find out who’s doing this and we’re going to go to the police the moment we do. Until then, I want you to move in here for the time being… at least until we catch this psychopath.”

“I… really? Are you sure?” I asked.
