“Exactly.”

“It’s not crazy, Reed,” Jennifer smiled. “I just didn’t expect you to have jumped that far so soon. You’ve always been so cautious.”

“Except when I end a three-day bender by getting married to a total stranger in Vegas,” I reminded her.

Jennifer laughed. “My point was that after that one mistake and the whole deal with Sofia, you became extremely cautious. And I can completely understand why… I mean, I would have done the same too. But the downside of that was that you shut yourself off from the world.”

“Sometimes it’s the only way to stay safe.”

“Maybe so.” Jennifer nodded. “And you may be keeping all the psychos out of your life, but you’re probably going to be keeping the opportunities and the possibilities out too.”

I smiled. “That’s very… philosophical of you.”

“I have my moments,” Jennifer smiled.

“What about you?” I asked, realizing that I hadn’t asked Jennifer anything personal in a long time. She was always the one inquiring into my life.

“What about me?” she asked.

“How are you?”

Jennifer raised her eyebrows. “You never ask me that question.”

“I know.” I nodded. “I’ve been monopolizing the conversation, haven’t I?”

“I knew you were the egotistical type the moment I met you.”

“Hey!”

Jennifer smiled. “But in a lovable way.”

“Thanks,” I said sarcastically. “That makes a huge difference. Are you going to answer my question?”

“This job is my life,” Jennifer sighed. “I don’t have much time left over for anything else.”

“You know, it wouldn’t kill you to take a few days off every now and then. You work later than I do.”

“That’s because I don’t have a child or a partner to go home to,” Jennifer pointed out. “At the moment, you have both.”

“Well, maybe you should work towards fixing that.”

Jennifer narrowed her eyes at me. “You sound like my mother now.”

I smiled. “How is Anita doing?”

Jennifer groaned. “My sister’s getting married in three months.”

“I thought Nora’s already married?”

“She is,” Jennifer replied. “I’m talking about Bridget.”

“Bridget is getting married?” I asked.

“Yeah.”

“Didn’t she just graduate college?”

Jennifer smiled. “That was six years ago, Reed,” she said, shaking her head at me. “She’s twenty-eight now.”
