Ah, no kidding. I wasn’t a fucking moron. I’d be hella lucky to have any part of Levi, and I wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity to plead my case now that I had him alone and he seemed willing to listen.

“But here’s the problem, as my practical business mind sees it. You’re an international rock god with millions of fans wanting to climb in your bed at any given hour of any given day, and I don’t want to climb over them on my way out of it. This isn’t my first rodeo, Killian—I’ve been in this business for years. And just because you make my dick hard and my brain a little fuzzy, doesn’t mean I’m going to throw all of my rules and common sense out the window.” Levi paused and took in a deep breath before blowing it out. “Even if you are ridiculously attractive.”

As Levi’s words ran through my mind, I studied him. “Levi?” I took my sunglasses off to be sure he could see that what I was about to say was the God’s honest truth.

“When are you going to understand that I don’t want that anymore? I don’t want them. I’ve also been in this business for years, and never have I wanted anything other than what you just described. But with you? Damn, Levi. From the second I set eyes on you, there’s been no one else. And if you stopped fighting me so hard at every turn, you just might see that.”

Levi

JESUS. WHEN KILLIAN turned his full attention on you, it was deadly. Combine that with the words coming out of his mouth, and I was surprised I hadn’t fallen out of the damn seat.

His blue eyes implored me to believe him, and I wanted to, but something he said had a red flag waving in front of me.

“From the second you laid eyes on me…no one else? Seriously?” I found that hard—no, impossible—to believe. “You’re telling me you haven’t been with anyone for—”

“Months.”

I let that sink in for a minute before I chuckled, shaking my head. “Right. You almost had me.”

“You think I’m joking?” He sat back, resting his arms along the rail, his foot still hooked behind mine. “It’s been about…six months, five days, and probably a handful of hours, if we’re being really specific.”

My mouth fell open. “What the… But—”

“But what? Have you seen me with anyone?”

“Well, no—”

“Caught me looking at anyone the way I look at you?”

He was out of his damn mind. “Killian, that’s fucking crazy.”

“Yes. It is. But I know you’re worth it.”

I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t speak. Couldn’t do anything but stare in complete and utter shock.

Killian was dead serious, of that I had no doubt, not anymore, but what the hell was I supposed to do with that information? I’d never been one to go with my emotions over logic, but I couldn’t deny Killian was making it difficult not to say fuck it and throw caution to the wind.

“Worth it,” I repeated to myself quietly. Yeah, I was worth it. I had enough self-respect and confidence to know that much, and Killian was a smart man to recognize a good thing when he saw it. It wasn’t like I couldn’t say the same thing about him, but—

“I see you every day. I watch how you are with people, how they react to you. There’s just something about you, Levi. Something that makes me want to be around you. Makes me want to be with you.”

I tried to stop the smile that pulled at my lips. Who knew Killian was such a sweet talker? His words were enough to melt even my steel heart, though I’d be damned if I showed it.

“Right,” I said. “So this isn’t just about sex. You’re not looking to win some kind of challenge here.”

Killian gave me a fuckin’ really? look. “Uh, no. I would’ve lost months ago.”

“And you want this thing between us to be…more.”

“Is it finally sinking into that stubborn head of yours?”

I smiled at the exasperation in his voice but it soon fell. “I can’t promise you more, Killian.”

“Then maybe you can promise to stop overthinking this. I don’t need a declaration of fucking love here; I just want to give this thing between us a chance. You think you can do that?”

Could I? Turn my brain off, simple as that?

With a sigh, I mimicked Killian’s position, leaning back against the seat and laying my arms out over the rail. “You mentioned lunch. How about we start there?”

A brilliant smile lit up Killian’s face as he got to his feet and made quick work of pulling up anchor. Then he moved in behind the wheel and started up the boat—

Well, tried to start up the boat.

With a frown marring his forehead, Killian took the key out and reinserted it, trying again, but there was no sound except the light sputtering of a failing engine.
