Levi

AS THE DOOR to the back entrance closed behind Halo, leaving me standing in the empty hallway with Killian, I suddenly realized that asking him to wait behind for me probably wasn’t the smartest thing I could’ve done—especially with how sexy he looked today.

I mean, wow, I didn’t think I’d ever met a person who could make a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt look so damn hot. But with the way U2 was stretched tight across his built chest and the sleeves hugged his biceps, it was all I could do to keep my eyes on his face.

It also didn’t help that he had just checked me out. He likely hadn’t even realized he was doing it, but when those blue eyes swept down over me, my cock sure as hell realized it—damn him for being so goddamn tempting.

Knowing it was too late to spit out something as mundane as never mind, I braced myself for my first one-on-one with him since we’d taken off from Los Angeles, determined to keep a cool head.

“What’s up, Levi?” Killian’s brow was creased, his tone less than cordial as I came to a stop opposite him. “Somethin’ the matter?”

Other than the fact you’re scowling at me when we used to have such an easy relationship? Nothing. Nothing at all.

I cleared my throat as I tightened my grip around my phone. “No, um, everything is great.”

Um? What the hell is the matter with me? My mother used to tell me that um was for people with nothing better to say, and that was certainly not the case with me—except when I was standing only inches from Killian Michaels, apparently.

“Okaaay, then.” Killian went to turn and walk away from me, but before he got one foot in front of the other, I reached out and grabbed his arm.

I hadn’t meant to do it, didn’t even know I was going to, but when Killian stopped and looked down at where my fingers were touching him, I became hyperaware of just how warm his bare skin was.

Hmm, I wonder if he’s that hot all over—

“Levi?”

My name falling off Killian’s tongue made my brain momentarily shut down to anything other than the feel of his skin, his cologne swirling around me, and the fact that I was touching him. But when he turned around to face me, I realized just how close we were standing. I drew my hand back and took a step away, knowing if I didn’t find my professionalism sometime soon, this was about to escalate—and fast.

The expression in Killian’s eyes now was stormy, and I couldn’t tell if it was irritation or something altogether different as he took a step toward me, again closing the distance I had purposely put between us, but this time I held my ground.

“Right,” I said, looking him directly in the eye. “I just wanted to say thank you for back there.”

“Thank you? What for?”

“Keeping things on track.” When Killian snorted, I said, “I mean it. You always keep the guys on topic, focused. So thank you.”

Killian narrowed his eyes and then took another step closer. He was so close that I actually had to back up or he would run into me, and as he kept coming, I realized that was exactly his intention.

“Killian,” I said, but it wasn’t much of a protest even to my own ears.

For the first time since I’d asked him to wait for me, Killian drew his hands out of his pockets and placed them on the wall by either side of my head. I swallowed, my admonishment getting stuck somewhere at the back of my throat as Killian lowered his eyes to my mouth and then licked his lips.

Fuck me. This was not good.

“You know…” Killian’s warm breath drifted over my lips, and no one was more shocked than me when I sighed. “Since I was such a good boy today and kept everyone in the room focused, what do you think I should get for that?”

I locked my eyes on his. “You need incentive now?”

Killian’s eyes darkened to a dangerous blue. “Couldn’t hurt. I mean, if you want me to keep babysitting, don’t you think I deserve some compensation for that?”

I scoffed. “If you think for a second I’m going to trade sex for—”

“I didn’t say that,” Killian said, and pushed off the wall, his lip curling. “But it’s nice to see where your head went.”

Heat rushed to my face. “I’m not stupid, Killian. You’re not exactly asking for monetary compensation.”

“Maybe I wanted you to do my fucking laundry.”

“I don’t even do my own laundry, so I guess you’re in for disappointment.”

Killian smirked. “Come on, Levi. When are you gonna admit what’s going on here?”

“Nothing is going on here.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“So if I kissed you right now”—Killian leaned forward, his breath on my cheek—“you wouldn’t kiss me back?”
