“How does that make you feel?”

He shrugs. “I don’t know. Like you should be married.”

I take a breath and think. How do I explain the complicated nature of this relationship to a six-year-old?

“Honey, your dad and I love each other, and yes, we kiss…” I roll my eyes. “But that doesn’t mean we should get married. Marriage is more than just kissing. It’s really serious. It’s not a decision that should be taken lightly. So if we ever get to that point, we will let you know.”

“Okay,” Brady says, and goes back to scrubbing.

After he is clean, I help him into his pajamas and tuck him into bed. I read him his bedtime story, and when he’s finally snoozing, I retire to the living room where I bust out my candy stash and start stuffing my face.

I would prefer peace and quiet right now, but Noodle is still hyperactive from earlier in the evening. She is flying all over the place. There’s nothing I can do about that. So I try to block her out as I pat myself on the back for getting Brady to bed before I strangled him.

I’m thinking about hiding my box of candy and heading to bed when someone knocks on my door.

I answer it and it’s Adam.

I think Noodle is still a little scared of him, because she scampers from the room as soon as she sees him.

I have the complete opposite reaction. I throw myself into his arms and breathe him in.

He kisses the top of my head and walks me into the apartment.

“I take it you’re happy to see me?” he says.

I laugh. “Always.”

“Has Brady gone to bed?”

“Yeah, I tucked him in about 20 minutes ago.”

He groans. “I was hoping to say hi before it he went to sleep.”

“I’m sorry. Maybe you can try again tomorrow.”

Adam is quiet for a while, and we both go sit on the couch.

“How about the two of you move in with me?”

My neck snaps back. “What?”

“If we lived together, we would all have more time with each other.”

I shake my head as I smile. “Have you been talking to Brady about this?”

His eyebrows draw together. “What? No.”

“Then the you two are on the same wavelength, because he literally just asked me why we don’t live with you.”

He laughs. “Smart boy.”

“Oh! By the way, he knows about us.”

“What? How?”

“Apparently, we weren’t as discreet as we thought we were being. He’s seen us kissing a couple of times.”

Adam moves closer to me on the couch. “So you mean I can do this without worrying he’ll catch us?” He wraps his arms around me and pulls me closer. Then he plants a sloppy kiss on my lips.
