“There was an accident. What’s important is he won’t return.”
“Fuck. Fuck.” My dad must hit something. “Sean? Fuck, William. Why the fuck are you telling me this? I don’t want anything to do with you anymore.”
“You’re just as entangled as I am. I kept the records. I have proof. If I go down, we all go down and no one wants that.”
“You’re fucking blackmailing me?”
“If that’s what it takes.” William is completely nonchalant. “We need to find out what the girl knows and what our sons know. If the evidence still exists, we need to control it. We need to control them.”
“No.” My dad’s voice is firm.
“No?” William’s voice is mocking.
“Whatever we did back then, the statute of limitations has run out. I haven’t been involved in anything you control in years. My reputation can survive whatever bullshit you try to leak out.”
“Can it handle what your wife is into?” William must step farther into the office because his voice is fainter. “She’s been involved since the beginning and never stopped. She could go to prison for what she’s done. You don’t want that, do you, Cam? For your family? For your son?”
“What the fuck did you get her into, Will?” Dad’s voice is raised again.
“Eli?” Mom’s voice makes me startle and turn.
“Hey, Mom.”
“What are you doing?” She glances at the door but stops at the island.
“Just returning a text.” I click off the device and step toward her. “Needed to grab a change of clothes.”
Her gaze darts to the kitchen opening, but the voices have quieted. They must have closed the office door. What the fuck has she done that can land her in prison?
“Oh.” She picks up the mail off the counter. “Have you seen your dad?”
“No.” Not a lie. I’ve heard him but haven’t seen him.
“His car is in the garage.” She glances over her shoulder.
“Huh.” I shrug. “I just got here myself.”
“You’re gone tonight?” She seems more subdued than normal. What the hell is she involved in that could destroy us?
“Yeah, I’ll be out all night.”
“Have you seen Ashley? She seems like a nice girl.” Mom sets the mail down and walks to the cabinet to get a glass. “I like her.”
My eyes narrow on her. Why is she pushing Ashley or is she just trying to get me away from Harper?
“I’m good.” I head to the staircase. “See you later.”
“We should have dinners this week,” she calls after me. “We could use more family time.”
Fuck. “Yeah.”
I get to my room and close the door. What the fuck was that?
Luke
I’m in Harper’s house, but Harper and her mom aren’t here. Her mom’s car is gone. I should trust them to be safe, but fuck it, I pull up the app and check where Harper’s ring is. It doesn’t have her current location. What the fuck.
I need to call about Ava, but first. I hit a number and the phone rings.
