The steady pang from my hangover headache dipped behind my eyes. I wasn’t remotely hungry, but it gave me the perfect excuse to try cracking her mind open or get her talking. Not to mention, I could use something with grease to soak up any leftover alcohol. I dug a knuckle into my eye socket.
“That makes two of us.”
The little line between her brows deepened.
“Don’t you have some other girl to follow around?” she snapped. The thought of Miranda and that entire nightmare shot bile up my throat. I swallowed hard. In my pause, the elevator opened on the first floor, giving her the opportunity to escape. I jogged after her.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you sound a little jealous, Angel.”
She kept marching for the cafeteria without bothering to acknowledge me keeping pace beside her.
“Stop calling me that.”
“Calling you what?” I asked, feigning ignorance.
She shot me an irritated glare and yanked the heavy, red painted door at the same time my eyes landed on it and tugged.
She gasped, slamming into my chest as the door ripped open. We froze, a hum settling in my chest, the scent of santal wrapping around me. The door bumped my heels as it closed, pushing us forward. Courtney tore from me, rubbing her bare arms.
“You’re strong for a tiny thing,” I teased, body still annoyingly buzzing from the close contact with her. She pursed her lips and hugged herself tight as she twisted away from me, gaze catching on the fast food counter. Her shoulders curled inward before she forced herself to face the salad bar. I didn’t get a chance to stop her from joining the line, so instead, I purposefully ordered extra.
It didn’t take long to find her sitting alone, picking at a very healthy lunch like she’d rather eat bugs. I dropped the tray in the middle of the table and sat across from her.
“Why are you sitting here?” she demanded. If looks could kill, I would’ve been shredded by the one she leveled at me. I reached for the extra fries and chicken nuggets, pushing them at her. She stared at them, then me, then them-
“Your lunch looks sad.”
Courtney’s upper lip curled. “I don’t want this.”
“Liar.”
Her mouth popped open, “I have my own lunch, thank you very much.”
“That you clearly don’t want.”
The vice grip on her plastic fork bent it in half.
“And how do you know that?”
I pointed at her with a French fry, wagging it. “You looked at this first.”
Her jaw snapped shut at the same time she dropped the broken fork. She snatched the fries and shoved a handful in her mouth. “Happy?” she asked.
I grinned at her. “Overjoyed.”
She rolled her eyes again but continued eating, eventually starting in on the nuggets after stealing my ranch. Her salad remained untouched.
Filled with fast food, my body begged for sleep, but I hadn't gotten what I came for yet. Leaning back in my chair, I licked the salt from my lip, prepared to ease her into conversation.
She crumbled the empty bag of fries and looked at me through her lashes. “Thanks.”
I shrugged. “Whenever you need someone to force junk food on you, I’m your guy.”
The corner of her lips twitched into a shy smile and that little smile stirred something in my chest I didn’t want to acknowledge. The intel I needed took a backseat- I needed to get the fuck away from her. I cleared my throat, shoving back from the table.
Wide gray eyes locked on mine without the threat of me invading her mind.
“I’m Ollie, by the way.” I blurted.Moron.
