“You did.”
“I didn’t scream.”
“No.”
“I ended the conversation before I disappeared inside myself.”
“Yes.”
His eye shone.
“I don’t feel good.”
“You aren’t required to.”
“But I don’t feel trapped.”
I lifted his trembling hands and kissed them.
“That matters.”
He leaned forward until his forehead rested against mine.
For a few breaths, the only sound in the office was the rain.
“She said you would leave when the money ran out.”
My heart clenched.
“What did you tell her?”
“Nothing.”
“Good.”
“I knew she was lying.”
I touched his cheek.
“She was.”
“It still hurt.”
“I know.”
He breathed slowly until the tension around his mouth eased.
“I want to go upstairs.”
“I’ll come with you.”
“No.”
I waited.
A faint smile appeared.
“Walk me as far as the stairs.”
