Ndileka shook her head. “Don’t talk to either of us until you’re decent, boy!” She stuck her nose in the air and strode into the kitchen, her heels clacking like a death knell. Mama Thandiwe followed her without a word, averting her gaze as she scuttled past the two of them.

Rupert met Winston’s gaze. “I suppose we’re in for it,” he said, and the alpha grimaced.

“Mbulelo!” Ndileka called from the kitchen.

Winston pulled out of Rupert, and Rupert fished around for the box of tissues on the end table. He tossed it to the alpha, who cleaned up hastily, before tucking himself back into his slacks. Rupert dabbed at himself before settling his skirt around his knees again.

“Not you,” Ndileka said when he tried to follow Winston into the kitchen. Mama Thandiwe moved to stand in the doorway. Rupert tried to sidle past her, but she blocked his every attempt. Finally, Rupert huffed and looked away.

“Anything you can say to him, you can say to me!” he called.

“Oh, be quiet,” Mama Thandiwe grumbled at him. “Let the alphas talk.”

Ndileka switched to English suddenly, possibly so Rupert could understand her. “And you are what!” she cried, gesturing wildly at Winston.

“Mother, please,” the other alpha said.

“Thandiwe!” Ndileka said. “Thandiwe, do you hear what our son is telling me?”

“I do,” Thandiwe said. “I cannot believe my ears.”

“Mother.” Winston sounded exasperated.

“He says he has been seeing this piece of work this whole time!”

“Excuse me!” Rupert cried.

“I know,” Thandiwe practically wailed.

“Mother, Mama,pleasewill you listen.”

“Why should I listen to a liar? Hm? My own son, why should I listen to the words that come out of his mouth, when all he does is lie!”

“Perhaps he lied because he knew you’d react like this!”

Mama Thandiwe lifted her brows as Ndileka turned to face Rupert. “How about you be quiet, hm? You are the cause of all this trouble. Never before has my son lied to me, and here you are and now he lies and sneaks around.”

“Because he knew you’d be upset!”

“If he knew this, then he should have known better than to keep seeing you!”

“He’s an adult! He can do what he wants!”

“Hisancestorsare rolling in their graves!” Ndileka thundered, and Rupert shrank back a little bit.

“That is enough, Mother.” Winston managed to push by her, then tussled a little with Mama Thandiwe, before finally stumbling free and grabbing Rupert’s hand. “Rupert and I have spoken at length about this.”

“Oh, you’ve spoken, have you?” Ndileka rolled her eyes.

“Didn’t look like you were doing a lot of speaking before,” Thandiwe muttered, and Rupert knew he turned crimson.

Winston gripped Rupert’s hand tighter. He was shaking. “What we do is our business.”

“Hmmm.” Thandiwe’s eyes went wide. Ndileka shook her head.

“Mbulelo, you have had no interest in getting married before, and then … this.” She waved a hand at Rupert. “But then you said you were through with him, so we thought, we will go find Mbulelo a spouse, and now we have come all this way to present some options for you.”

“You what,” Winston spat.
