Mama Thandiwe held out her hands. “We thought, at last, Mbulelo wants to settle down. So we asked around in other villages, and we have found several omegas—”

“Good omegas,” Ndileka said, lifting her brows.

“—who said they will be honored if Mbulelo picks them as a bride.”

Winston drew his free hand down his face. “I cannot believe you,” he protested. “I did not ask you to do this!”

“It’s tradition!” Ndileka barked back. “If you want to get married, then we will find you a spouse the traditional way!”

“To hell with tradition! Rupert’s the only one I want to marry!” Winston thundered. He shook his head furiously, then went for the door. He paused, pointing back at his parents. “You will tell those omegas you are sorry, you misunderstood. There will be none of this—tradition.”

“Mbulelo!” Ndileka cried, but Winston hauled the door open, then shoved Rupert out ahead of him. He slammed the door shut after himself. He stood there for a second, just trembling.

Then, before Rupert could ask if he was all right, he said, “We’ll get on the bus.”

“I could call Moose,” Rupert said, then remembered he’d yelled at the poor man. He pressed his fingers to his lips.

“It’s fine,” Winston said. “It’s late. The walk will do us good.”

It was, at least, a short walk to the bus stop. Every few seconds, Winston would glance over his shoulder, as though he feared his parents would come after them.

They didn’t. The night remained calm and silent, all the way back to the penthouse.
