So I thought.
Beck leans in and his clean linen smell, which I never thought was sexy till now, consumes me as his warm breath hits my ear. “Let’s go to the dance floor.”
Holy hell. Someone’s warm breath against any part of my face shouldn’t make my thighs jerk together.
“Okay,” I basically yell so he can hear me.
Like before, he grabs my hand, and we head down the closest set of steps.
We shimmy our way to an open spot. Well, I shouldn’t say open because no matter where we stand, our bodies are smashed together. Beck is behind me, so he wraps his arms around my waist to hold me close. Instantly, our hips fall into rhythm together. I’m not sure how much time passes before I spin around to face him, my wrists locking behind his neck.
“What?” I ask. “Why are you smiling at me like that?”
“I’m just… we should have started getting along a long time ago.”
“Who know all we needed was to get a few drinks in our bodies and—”
Cold, sticky liquid splashes in my face.
“What the fuck?” Beck shouts and shoves the guy next to me.
“Chill out, man, it was an accident.”
“Back up,” Beck says, stepping between me and the guy whose drink is now covering the left side of my hair and face.
The guy holds his hands up and does just that. Once he’s far enough away to Beck’s liking, Beck turns around.
“Are you okay?”
Instead of answering, I burst into laughter. “And now you’re ready to beat someone up for me. Wow, we have come a long way in the last three hours.”
A cocky grin touches his lips as his thumb swipes under my left eye. “You’ve got a little makeup right here.”
My smile drops as I grab my clutch and flip it open so I can see myself with the built-in mini mirror. He’s right—black mascara is smeared on my face.
“Still want to marry me?” I tease.
He smirks and then nods. “Yeah, a little makeup isn’t going to scare me.”
The way he answers, so carefree and relaxed, makes me pause. I enjoy this new playful side of him. We aren’t actually talking about getting married. I’m pretty sure at this point, it’s a running joke. My heart flutters a little at the amount of flirting we’re doing just to keep the joke running. Tonight is a good night. I’ll keep playing because I’m having fun, and who knows? Maybe this turn of events could turn into a friendship for Beck and me.
“What about last weekend when I was staying with my brother, and you caught me in my ratty sweats and holey T-shirt?”
He nods as if he’s thinking it over.
“Well, if I can’t stand looking at them and you’re my wife, I guess I’d just take them off.”
My stomach flutters, and I have to look away. I’m not an idiot. I know I’m blushing right now. Like before, I have to pinch my thighs together. Beck is making my mind venture to places it really, and I mean really, shouldn’t.
“Noted” is the response I finally come up with.
Beck smirks again, and I shove him back. “Stop doing that.”
He laughs and pulls me closer, his arms looping around my lower back.
“I can’t help it. My future wife brings out a side of me I didn’t even know existed.”
“Hmm, a good side or a bad side?”
