Totally normal.
Then suddenly music, movement.
The realization hits all at once.
It’s time.
My stomach flips hard. “Oh wow.”
Sophie squeezes my hand.
Luci fixes my veil one last time. “You okay?”
“No.”
“Good. You’re human.”
Oliver appears beside me again, holding out his hand very seriously. “You ready, Sunshine?”
That’s what finally destroys me. Oliver. My sweet boy who lost his mother too young and somehow still grew into someone so loving.
I crouch carefully in front of him despite Luci yelling about wrinkles.
“Hey,” I whisper.
“You’re crying again.”
“Apparently, that’s my personality now.”
He grins, then straightens with a seriousness that reminds me so much of Ethan as he offers me his hand. I take it, and together, we walk toward the ceremony.
The ballroom doors open.
The skyline shines beyond floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan, golden light spilling across white flowers and candlelight and everyone we love gathered together.
Luci and Sophie walk first, looking beautiful and emotional and slightly feral. The triplets toddle behind them in coordinated madness. Ava throws flower petals directly into her own face. Megan sits down halfway through the aisle in protest. Miles attempts to escape toward the cake. Captain nearly follows him before Jeffrey physically intercepts the dog mid-ring theft attempt.
The entire room laughs.
Then I see Ethan.
And everything else disappears.
Years later, and this man still takes the breath directly from my lungs.
He stands at the altar in a black tuxedo, broad shoulders tight with emotion he’s barely holding together.
Silver threaded through dark hair. Blue eyes locked completely on me. Like I’m still the first thing he’s ever truly wanted.
His expression breaks softly the moment he sees me.
That look.
That devastating, helpless look.
Like he still can’t believe I’m real.
And suddenly, Milwaukee airport flashes through my mind.
