“Okay.” She nodded. “Fine, Berlin, but just be aware that you need to have your artists pulling in some cash soon and not just recording music for albums that may not come out for years.”

“I hear you. I’ll get everyone a feature run.”

“I’ll take it.”

“A’ight then. Cool.”

We both looked at the entrance of the living room as our father rejoined us, and just like that, the business talk was over.

CHAPTER 26

MYOME

Ireached for my cellphone with my eyes still shut and tapped around the screen until it stopped.

“Hm?” I answered while still on the brink of sleep.

“Myome?” Genie’s soft voice forced my eyes open.

“Genie?” I countered.

“Hey,” she whispered. “I wouldn’t call you if it wasn’t an emergency but I really need some help.”

“Yeah. What’s wrong?”

I looked at my screen and saw it was four in the morning.

“My baby daddy is tripping and he took my keys. His dumbass friends are out there and I may be able to take him but I can’t take all of them and my fucking son is asleep in the other room. I just… I need a witness and I can’t call the cops because––”

I cut her off. “I’m coming.”

“Coming where?” Drix grumbled, awake.

“Just stay where you are and send me the address. I’m on my way.”

“Thank you.” The line went dead and I hopped up.

“Where you going, Yo?” Drix yawned and turned on the lamp on his side of the bed.

“Something is wrong with Genie and her baby daddy and she needs to get out of there with her baby.”

“A’ight man.” He sighed but pushed up and climbed out of bed. “Let’s go get her then.”

“You’re coming?”

“Myome, what the fuck I look like letting you go meet up with a nigga that got his own baby mama shook?”

I didn’t respond because I knew he was right. Instead, I headed to the bathroom and threw on a sweatshirt and sweatpants while Drix made a call and threw on a quick outfit. I brushed my teeth as quickly as humanly possible while Drix carefully picked two guns out of the closet.

“If we’re going to do this, you gon’ move when I say move and stay when I say stay, Myome, or we gon’ stay our asses home.”

“I hear you, Berlin.”

“Promise me.”

“I promise.”

“A’ight. Let’s go then.” Drix walked me to his truck and yanked the door open for me before jogging around to the driver’s side. “You got the address?”
