A narrow window to get in and bring him home.
It had sounded urgent.
Clean.
Necessary.
Every lie did when it came from someone you trusted.
Falcon leaned forward suddenly.
“Wait.”
His finger landed on a grid coordinate buried inside an attachment to the flight plan.
It wasn’t our landing zone.
It wasn’t the location where we had been told to recover the asset.
It was farther north, on the other side of the mountain.
A single square on a massive frozen range.
Nothing special.
At first.
Then Sarah’s father froze.
His face lost what little color it had.
Sarah saw it too.
“Dad, what is it?”
He stepped toward the monitor as if something were pulling him.
“I know that location.”
Fathom enlarged the map.
The coordinate glowed on the screen.
A frozen valley surrounded by rock and ice. Miles from the nearest settlement. Miles from any road that appeared on an official map.
“How?” I asked.
The answer came quietly.
Like a confession dragged out of him after five years.
“Because that’s where Wade disappeared.”
Sarah sucked in a breath.
Her father reached for the desk, bracing one hand against it.
“I searched that entire region. I went back twice after the government called off the recovery. I found shell casings, blood in the snow, pieces of their equipment.” His jaw clenched. “But I never found the facility.”
