Rook laughed.

Not the bitter sound I had heard before.

Not laughter weighted by the memory of six dead men.

“I noticed.”

Rook grew quiet.

The harbor lights reflected in his eyes.

“You saved my life.”

My heart beat faster.

“On the mountain?”

“After it.”

I frowned.

“You’re going to have to explain that.”

“I survived the ambush. That wasn’t the same as living.”

The words settled between us.

Raw.

Honest.

Rook looked toward the warehouse.

“For over a year, everything was about the men I lost. Finding who betrayed them. Making someone pay.”
