“Which country?”

“All of them.”

Sniper considered that. “Fair.”

He joined them.

Laptops covered two long tables. Maps hung from temporary panels. Mission reports, financial records, and satellite images filled every available surface.

Thousands of pages.

Thousands of names.

Thousands of opportunities for someone to lie.

Rook stopped beside Fathom.

“What do we know?”

“That the official report is fiction.”

“We knew that already.”

“Now I can prove it.”

Fathom touched a key.

A classified report appeared on the center monitor.

“The official investigation claims enemy forces intercepted our communications eighteen minutes before insertion.”

Sniper folded his arms. “We weren’t transmitting eighteen minutes before insertion.”

“No, we weren’t.”

Fathom opened the actual communications log beside the report.

“Our radio silence began forty-three minutes before the helicopter reached the landing zone. No outgoing transmissions. No unauthorized signals. No breach.”

Rook studied the conflicting records.

“Someone changed the timeline.”

“Someone created an explanation for how the enemy knew we were coming.”

“When?”

“Thirty-six hours after the ambush.”

Another document appeared.

The authorization at the bottom carried General Robert Sheffield’s electronic signature.
