“Mm, you like it when I’m naughty.” I took pride in the way he sucked in his breath when I reached down to palm his cock through the material of his jeans.
“I do, indeed. And if you play your cards right, naughty times may be on the menu tonight after dessert.” He smacked my lips with his. “Now then, take a seat, my love, and I will dish out your dinner before I forget all about food and put you up on the countertop.”
I was tempted to hop up there right now, but I knew how much work he’d put in to making my favorite meal, so I opted for restraint. “So, no more clues about what anniversary is tomorrow?” My curiosity was killing me.
He only smiled and wouldn’t give me any more clues during the meal. Dammit, I couldn’t figure it out. Even later, after having made love and while naked in bed together, he wouldn’t give me a hint.
“What time is it?” he asked, snuggling me close.
“Mm. Almost midnight. Gonna be a long day if we don’t get some sleep.” He’d kept me up longer than I would’ve expected. Yet my body had no regrets. At least on Fridays I only had work and no class.
“At one minute past midnight, I can tell you what day it is.”
My eyes popped open. “Oh, yeah?” I could stay up five more minutes to satisfy my burning curiosity. “Wait. Where are you going?”
He donned his prosthesis before getting out of bed. “Just to get some water. I’ll be right back.”
I was on the edge of sleep when I heard him come back in.
“Guess what time it is?” he asked.
My lips curved into a smile. “After midnight?”
“Sure is, sunshine.”
I loved it when he called me by my nickname. Loved what it represented to him. I was his sunshine in the storm. “Okay. Tell me.”
“I think I’d rather show you.”
I opened my eyes to see him beside the bed, down on one knee and holding up a diamond ring. I quickly scrambled to a sitting position, simply staring at him and then at the gorgeous platinum-set ring.
“Chloe. I love you more than I ever thought possible. Yesterday was the anniversary of you walking into my life. Will you make today the anniversary of me asking you to be my wife?”
He cringed.
“Jesus, I didn’t mean to make that rhyme. I’ve been practicing, and there’s just so much I want to say about you being my sunshine, and my world, and how much I love you, but I didn’t want it to be this long-drawn-out speech—”
I put my finger to his mouth, amused at his rambling since Aiden was not a man who rambled. That he was doing so now showed his nerves and how important this must be to him. “I thought it was beautiful.”
He swallowed hard, taking my hand and kissing the inside of my wrist. “Then I’ll spend a lifetime coming up with rhymes, if you’ll do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

Aiden
I’d always considered myself a brave man, but asking Chloe to marry me was absolutely terrifying. In my heart, I knew we were solid. I believed she loved me. The last few months together had proven it over and over again. Our relationship had been incredible. But having her say yes meant everything to me.
“My answer is yes. A thousand times yes.”
My smile had never been bigger. I slipped the ring on the finger of her left hand, content at seeing it there. Getting back into the bed, I gathered her close and dropped a kiss on her lips. “I love you.”
She wiped at her eyes. “I love you, too.”
“Happy tears?”
“The happiest.”
“What do you envision for a wedding?” If she wanted to do it big, we’d do it, but I preferred something simple.
