“You went and got what?”

Evan shook his head. “I didn’t know what to do,” he repeated. “She stopped breathing.”

“Why didn’t you call for help?”

“I tried my car phone, but it didn’t work. Then I tried CPR but she was dead. My brother was running for re-election in the governor’s race, and I accidentally killed my pregnant lover.”

Nate clenched his jaw. “So what did you do?”

Evan lost it all over again. “I rolled her up in the rug and got rid of her.”

“Where did you get rid of her?”

“I brought her out into the forest until I could figure out what to do—in case Mini had rented the place out…”

“What about Callie?”

“She followed me into the forest. I didn’t realize it at first.” He grabbed a tissue and blew his nose. “I took her to the mainland and dropped her off at the diner.”

“You trashed the cottage?”

Evan nodded. “Mini and Leah had just finished redecorating. They would have noticed the rug missing, so I trashed it and made up the story about Trace’s kids.”

“What did you do with Samantha?”

“I took her out on the boat—sunk her down in the water.”

Nate rubbed at the back of his neck. Evan’s story wasn’t adding up. “So you’re telling me you pushed Samantha, which caused her to fall back and sustain a fatal head injury, you realized she was dead, wrapped her up in a large area rug, dragged her into the forest and up a hill littered with rocks and trees, then took Callie onto the mainland—to Hartford, Connecticut—came back, trashed the cottage, and got rid of Samantha’s body, all before going home?”

Evan nodded.

“Don’t bullshit me, Evan. Rugs are heavy. Dead bodies are heavier. You wrapped her in a rug and carried her up the hill all by yourself?”

“Yes.”

Nate shook his head, not buying it. “Who helped you?”

“No one.”

“Was it Captain Bob?”

Evan’s eyes went wide. “No. No, Captain Bob didn’t have anything to do with any of it.”

“Then why is he dead?”

“Because he killed himself.”

Nate shook his head again.

“I don’t know about Bob or any of the other stuff that’s happened around here.”

Nate held his gaze.

“I don’t, Nate.”

They would see. “I’d strongly suggest you contact your attorney and get serious about deciding if you’re taking the fall alone. I won’t take you to the station in cuffs. We’re not going to make this hard on anyone else.” Because soon, it was going to be a nightmare for the entire Sanderson family.

Evan nodded, crying again. “I’ve ruined their lives. Lily’s and the kids’.”
