Nate wanted to remind Evan that he’d ruined Samantha’s and Callie’s too, but what was the point?

“Let’s go.” Evan stood. “Let’s get this over with.”

They stepped into the hallway where Dad and Brad were putting on their coats.

Dad smiled. “There you are. I was starting to wonder…” He trailed off, his smile fading. “Is everything all right?”

Nate nodded as he glanced at Brad. “Everything’s fine. Evan and I are going for a drive.” He would call Dad later—fill him in on everything when no one could overhear.

Dad pulled on his thick wool hat. “Are you going to the house? You’ve heard from Callie?”

Nate frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“Callie and Molly headed over to grab the pies. They’ve been gone a while, and I can’t get Molly on the cell phone—”

Nate thought Callie was here. And he’d forgotten about the fucking pies. “How long have they been gone?”

Dad looked at his watch. “About thirty minutes. I tried Molly’s phone twice but she’s not answering. Brad and I thought we’d make sure they didn’t wind up off the road with the snow coming down the way it is.”

Samantha’s killer was standing right next to him, so why did he suddenly feel sick? “Did you try Callie’s?”

Dad shook his head. “I don’t have her number.”

Nate hurried down the hall, pulling his phone from his pocket and pressing Callie’s contact information on his screen, listening to her phone ringing in the family room next to her purse. Dread sank deep in his belly as his gaze tracked around the room as if he were in slow motion: the kids playing with blocks on the floor, Liam watching the game, and everyone else laughing and talking on the couches. “Where are Thomas and Matthew?” he demanded.

Everyone stopped their conversations and looked at him.

“Where are they?” he demanded again, growing impatient as the seconds ticked by.

Mom blinked her surprise as she stared at him. “I don’t know, honey.”

He bolted back toward the door, meeting Dad’s gaze. “We’ve gotta go. You remember the combination for the safe—for Grandpa’s gun?”

Some of the color left Dad’s cheeks as understanding dawned. “Oh, dear God.”

“Let’s go.”

Brad hurried after them into the snow and fading light. “What’s going on?”

Nate shook his head. “Stay here.”

“Like hell.” Brad got in the back seat of the Tahoe before Nate could take off.

Nate gunned the engine and picked up his radio as he shot out of the driveway. “Kay, I’m going to need backup.”

“Can you repeat your copy, Nate? I can hardly hear you.”

He clenched his jaw, wanting to yell and tell her to listen—for time to stop until he could make sure Callie and Molly were all right. “I said I need backup over at my house. Get everyone out to my place—Mac, Shawn, Denny. They should be on the lookout for Matthew and Thomas Sanderson.”

“Matthew and Thomas?” Kay asked, the confusion and question clear in her voice.

“Get everyone to the house, Kay. Callie and Molly are in trouble. No lights or sirens.”

“All right.”

“What the fuck’s going on, man?” Brad asked as Nate rushed down the lane. “Why are you looking for my dad?”

Nate came up behind Matthew’s Cadillac half-parked in the driveway, and his heart stopped when he spotted Molly lying crumpled in the snow behind her car.
