“Why you ain’t tell me?”
I let out a slow breath before finally looking over at him.
“I don’t know.”
He pulled his eyebrows together. “Sianni.”
“I’m serious. I don’t know.” I looked back down at my hands. “It’ not something I like talking about.”
He was quiet for a second.
“Was it before Amani?”
“It was with him.”
Kyrie nodded slowly, his jaw working as he stared through the windshield.
“How far along were you?”
I swallowed. “Almost twelve weeks.”
His head turned toward me again. “Damn, ma.”
“Yeah.”
The sympathy in his eyes made me look away. I didn’t want him feeling sorry for me. That wasn’t why I hadn’t told him.
“I was excited, too,” I admitted quietly. “Like, really excited. I had already started thinking about baby names and everything. Then, one day…” I shook my head. “It was just over.”
Kyrie didn’t say anything, but his hand reached across the console and found mine.
“So, when I found out I was pregnant this time, I was happy. I am happy.” I squeezed his hand. “But there’s still this little part of me that keeps waiting for something to go wrong.”
His thumb moved slowly across the back of my hand.
“That’s why you was acting like that this morning?”
I nodded. “Yeah.”
He leaned back against the seat and released a breath.
“You should’ve told me, ma.”
“I know.”
“I ain’t saying that shit because I’m mad at you.” His eyes met mine. “I don’t like knowing you was sitting around scared and ain’t said shit to me.”
My chest tightened.
“What were you going to do, Kyrie?”
“Something.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “See? That’s exactly what I’m talking about.”
“What?”
“You always think you can fix everything.”
