Kyrie’s thumb stopped moving against my hand. The doctor’s expression softened.
She explained that one previous miscarriage didn’t automatically mean this pregnancy would end the same way, but they would still pay attention to my history and how this pregnancy progressed.
I nodded, trying to take in everything she was saying.
“But right now,” she continued, “we’re going to focus on this pregnancy and see how things are looking today.”
“Okay.”
I finally glanced at Kyrie. He wasn’t looking at me anymore. His eyes were fixed on the doctor, his jaw tight as hell. I knew that look; he was listening to every damn word.
A little while later, once everything was set up, my nerves came rushing right back.
Kyrie stayed beside me, one hand wrapped around mine while his eyes moved between me and the screen. I barely breathed as I stared at it.
Then, the doctor pointed toward the monitor.
“There’s the baby.”
My eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Oh, my God.” ‘
Kyrie leaned forward. “Where?”
The doctor pointed again, showing him exactly where to look.
“That little thing right there?” he asked.
A laugh slipped out.
“Yes,” the doctor replied.
Kyrie stared at the screen like nothing else in the room existed. Then, we heard a fast little sound that filled the room, and my hand flew over my mouth.
My baby had a heartbeat. The tears I had been fighting slipped free as relief rushed through me so hard I couldn’t stop them.
Kyrie’s hand tightened around mine, and I turned my head toward him. For once, this man didn’t have shit to say.
His lips were slightly parted, his eyes locked on the screen as he listened.
“Kyrie,” I whispered.
He finally looked at me. “That’s our baby?”
I nodded, laughing through my tears. “Yeah.”
His eyes went back to the monitor.
“Damn.”
That one word made me laugh even harder. Of course, out of everything this man could’ve said, at the first sound of his child’s heartbeat, “Damn,” was what came out.
But the look on his face said everything his mouth couldn’t.
After we wrapped everything up at the doctor’s office, she gave us the date for our next appointment. I gathered my things, then Kyrie and I headed out.
Neither of us said much on the way to the truck, and I already knew what was coming.
