My sword vibrates with agreement.
I hold the weapon out to my side. And the drips braid together, forming a thin black string of power hanging off the end of my sword.
“Walk away peacefully, and no one has to get hurt.” I give the humans one last chance.
They open fire.
And I let them.
Because their outward aggression is all the justification I need to release my own.
A wall of invisible gravito catches the bullets halfway between us.
They don’t seem to realize.
And they certainly don’t understand that this is their last moment to live.
From across the street, I twist my wrist, twirling the blade once.
Then I swing my sword.
Chapter 56
Rune
Smoke poofs up in front of me as I reach the top of the stairs.
“No.” I swipe a hand through it.
The smoke that I know can’t actually be smoke disappears as I run through it.
I’m not waiting in the damn stairwell.
I can hear the rumble of Vameer’s voice a moment before I reach the window.
And as I’m yanking the curtains to the side, gunfire erupts below.
I press my hands to the glass and look down at the street in front of the house.
Vameer is below me. Sword out to his side. With all six men shooting at him.
I try to scream, but even if I could, it wouldn’t be heard above the noise of gunshots.
The sound, even from inside, is deafening.
Louder than I ever imagined.
The men take a synchronized step forward. And they keep shooting.
But my vampire doesn’t stumble back.
He doesn’t react at all.
I narrow my eyes at the shimmer in the center of the street.
Is he stopping the bullets?
My gaze drops to his sword as it starts to move.
