“Seriously?”

“Yeah.” He grinned. “Call it an early Christmas present. I mean, I’ve got you some other things too, and something for us together—but we’re totally not opening that when we’re at Alfie and Jonathan’s.”

I snorted. “Is it the banana sundae dildo you found?”

“I’m not saying a word.”

It was and I knew I’d laugh as soon as I saw it, but I was also very excited to try it out on him, simply because I loved taking Milo apart. “We can use it before we go out,” I said. “I can’t wait to fuck you with it.”

“Does this mean you’re not going to fuck me when we get home?”

“No, I’m going to do that too. After all, you’ve gone to all that trouble for me.” I slid one hand around him to squeeze his arse through his jeans, smirking as he groaned.

“Fuck, darling, you’re going to kill me. I’ve got to walk home like this now.”

“You already walked here. A little further won’t hurt.” I kissed him again, then stepped back and gestured towards the back door. “Come on then, let’s go. I want to go home and unwrap my early Christmas present.”

I grabbed my coat and my bag, putting my hat on and picking up my yellow umbrella to open up over us as we walked home. The rain hadn’t let up, but it was gentle rather than pelting, and the Christmas lights glowed softly around us in the misty darkness.

Our hands were clutched together tightly, our heads close under the umbrella as we talked about our days, our plans to spend Christmas with Alfie and Jonathan at Jonathan’s cottage, and the latest pictures from Darcy and Owen on a beach in Australia.

There was an undercurrent of tension and heat, a promise of what was to come as soon as we closed the door.

A promise of what forever was going to bring.

And I couldn’t wait to get started.

Epilogue

THREE YEARS LATER

Milo

I’d told myself I wasn’t going to cry today, but I’d known it was a lie from the fucking start.

But what else was I going to do when I was watching one of my best friends get married to the love of his life?

Alfie and Jonathan hadn’t wanted a big, fancy wedding. Just the idea of being the centre of attention in front of more than ten people was enough to make both of them break out in hives. So, in the end, they’d decided to book a slot at Heather Bay registry office on a Wednesday afternoon at the end of April and go down with a handful of close friends.

“Here,” Rupert whispered, handing me a handkerchief so I could furiously dab my leaking eyes and running nose.

“Cheers,” I said, trying not to sniff too loudly as Alfie and Jonathan said their vows in front of the registrar, both of them dressed in dark suits with beaming smiles on their faces. Fuck, just seeing them so happy was enough to set me off again.

Luckily, I wasn’t the only one crying.

Owen was one second away from full-on sobbing, and Theo had been in bits since we’d arrived. I was pretty sure he’d gone through at least two packets of tissues by now, although where the used ones were ending up, I wasn’t sure. Probably in Laurie’s suit pockets.

In hindsight, I should have shoved a couple of packets in mine.

Alfie had said we didn’t have to dress up, since they weren’t going for anything fancy, but there was no way I was missing the chance to jazz things up and add a bit of colour to the proceedings. It’d taken a while to find what I wanted, but eventually I’d gotten hold of a gorgeous lavender suit, a powder blue shirt, and some matching baby blue loafers. I’d added a pink tie I’d pinched out of Rupert’s wardrobe, several stacks of rings, and a little boutonniere of lavender to tie it all together.

The result was stunning and I looked hot as fuck.

Rupert kept eyeing me hungrily, his cheeks flushing every time I caught him looking. I knew exactly what we’d be doing as soon as we got home that evening, and there was a very good chance he’d want me to keep the suit on while I fucked him, since I didn’t wear one very often. Or maybe he’d want to fuck me… Either way, I was down.

My tears kept flowing as Alfie and Jonathan exchanged their rings, a little hiccup escaping me when they were declared husbands. Rupert’s foot nudged against mine as we clapped, offering me an anchor as I would for him.

It’s what we always were for each other when life, the world, or our emotions got too much for us to handle alone.
