“How?” Seagrave asked.
“I apologize, Morris, but this is need-to-know only. I’m blacking you out.”
“Understood, sir.”
Brax waited, expecting Ryan to ask him to step out of the room. Instead, Ryan just shook his head. “You’re the head of Omega Team,” he reminded Brax. “You need to know.”
“Yes, sir.”
“What time is the heist team meeting?”
“Seven.”
“Perfect. Plan it out however you want then fill me in. I’ll keep Wolfe in the loop. Don’t worry. The real Sisters will be out of the Wolfe home within the next two hours and they’ll stay out until after the gala.”
“How? And where are they going?”
“Damien’s house. It’s not common knowledge, but there’s a vault beneath it. No one’s getting in there to get the Sisters.”
“But how are you getting them there?”
“Trisha—Wolfe’s wife—is about to get an invitation from Nikki to come over for lunch. I have a feeling she’ll accept.”
Brax chuckled. “Fair enough. I’ll wipe that worry out of my head. And I’ll try to get a read on Jorge at the meeting this afternoon. We’ll plan to run a few rehearsals between now and the gala, too, just to keep up the show.”
Ryan turned Grey’s sound and visual back on. “Sorry about that. We’re just about done here.”
“Of course. Not a problem.”
“Final order of business,” Ryan said. “We’re bringing Sabrina in. Morris, you’re an excellent asset. But you’re not a field agent. And we could use a double.”
“Sir,” Brax began, “I don’t know…”
“It’s not your call. I’m telling you only as a courtesy. And because I want you to set up the meet.”
“Sir?”
“Ask her to come to your office for lunch today. Bring her through from Z-Tech to one of the conference rooms. I’ll join you a few minutes in. As for you, Grey, I don’t think you should be at that meeting, but if Colonel Seagrave agrees, I’d like you to arrange a time to talk with her sometime after. Perhaps a coffee after work. She may well want to vent to someone else who’s straddling these two organizations.”
“Yes, sir. I’d be happy to.”
Brax dragged his fingers through his hair. “I really don’t think—”
“Agent Reed,” Ryan said gently. “She needs to know the truth. And from what I’ve read and seen, she has solid skills. And it’s not just about recruiting her to SSA. She needs to know the situation she’s in.”
He wanted to curse. Hell, he wanted to throw something.
Unfortunately, Ryan was right.
“I’ll get her in. We had—we had sort of a fight. But I’ll call her. I’ll get her here.”
Ryan nodded. “And then we’ll go from there.”
Chapter Sixteen
I end the call with Brax, positively giddy that he wants to talk. I know I hurt him. Even if I was justified in running after the bombing, that doesn’t matter. I still hate myself for ever believing he could have tried to kill me.
And if I hate myself for it, then can I really blame him for feeling the same way?
