“You’re coming over?”
“Yes. I have something to tell you.”
“Wow. Um, okay. It’s not something you can say over the phone, right?”
She went silent for some seconds. “No, it’s something I have to show you.”
I cleared my throat, my mind swirling in a thousand directions. “All right then, I’d be expecting you, V.”
I did not wait for the line to drop before I frantically started arranging the house. I had some rose petals and scented candles at home, I scattered them around, letting the petals lead to the table where I was going to place the three course meal I ordered for. I was told the food would arrive in twenty minutes. I even ordered an apology cake.
I sighed as I lit the last two candles in the middle of the dining table.
Am I going overboard? Is this pathetic?
No. She was worth every bit of the effort and more. A lot more.
As soon as the food and cake arrived, I placed them on the table and rushed to go have my bath as she could appear at any minute.
Scarcely had I worn my pants when I heard the doorbell. I pulled on a loose tee-shirt and went to answer the door.
It was Vanessa, alright, and my, did she look ravishing. A little tired but absolutely stunning.
Her shapely body was sheathed in a lovely pastel blue dress that flattered her figure and more importantly, she was standing in my doorway. I would not have cared if she came dressed in leaves. That she came. That was more than enough for me.
I enveloped her in a tight embrace, wondering how I would cope if this bright-eyed baby chose to leave me. I shuddered to think.
“I missed you, V…”
She stood on her tiptoes and bent my head so she could press her lips against mine. The feel was heavenly. That tender kiss spoke volumes about one to the other. I felt so emotional I could almost sense the back of my eyes sting as my throat went dry.
I stepped back, welcoming her into my house. The look in her eyes was totally worth it when I turned on the dim lights, enabling her to see the petals strewn about the room all the way to the table.
“You did this? For me?”
I smiled, the sparkling in her eyes getting more visible by the second. “Yes. Everything, for my Princess.”
She engulfed me in another embrace and didn’t let me go for quite some time.
Needless to say, that dinner was one of the best I’ve ever had in my life, not just because the food was great– it had to be, cause it was rather pricey– but because of who I was sharing my table with.
I gazed at her long and hard, just drinking in the delicateness of the features of the woman I love. My Baby Girl.
“Here, Oscar,” she said and slid her phone to me. It was an opened message from a number saved as Cher with a sparkly heart beside it. The kind of relief I felt on reading the message …it was inexplicable.
Apparently, Cheryl was pregnant for some guy she met in Chicago. Not me. She knew she was, and that was why she said yes about being on the pill. She said she was trying to tell Vanessa whose baby it was, but she hurriedly cut the call and was unreachable ever since.
“Wow, this is awesome news!” I exclaimed, before thinking about how silly I was earlier, then added, “I’m so incredibly sorry I talked and acted like that. I feel so ashamed of myself and don’t know if I can ever look you in the eye again. I’m so so, sorry, Princess.”
She smiled, setting down her fork as she chewed her steak quietly. She took a gulp of the fruit juice as though preparing herself for something.
“I still have something to tell you, Oscar. More like show you though.”
My heart thumped in my chest. What could that be? Am I safe? Is something wrong with her? Did something happen to her?
“It’s nothing serious, actually. I’d show you after dinner.”
She might have said that, but it did nothing to hide the tension in her jaw and the apprehensive way she kept on smiling. I noticed the slight tremor in her fingers when she tried to pick up her fork. The blush in her face was pretty obvious, even in the dim lighting.
