“What! No! I just had her join us cause I wanted to spice things up and I was so sure I never really satiated you. All I was looking out for was your own pleasure, now this happened and now it’s my fault?”

“Come off it, Vanessa! You created this mess and now I have to fix it. Expect my lawyer to contact you anytime from now,” he said, snatched his blazer from the bed and stalked out.

I had never felt so stupid in my life. Like what exactly did I do so wrong that the Fates had to punish me this way. My eyes felt so heavy but my heart felt even heavier. Hot tears ran down my face as I felt my chest spasm in deep, gut-wrenching sobs.

I furiously hot-pedaled back to Tribeca, my knuckles all white from gripping the steering wheel too hard in anger. ‘Just who does she think she is? Thinking she can turn me into a really cool cash cow or what?’ I thought as I sped down the connecting street that led to my block.

As I turned my key in the door, the one thought that I had been ignoring popped up again. 'But what if it’s really not her fault? What if…?

I felt increasingly stupid for shouting at her, threatening her with charges, and being a dick to a woman that was barely feeling fine.

I punched myself in the face a few times, angry at my shallowness and the way I jumped into conclusion.

Apologizing would hardly do anything now but it is all I can do at the moment. I dialed her number. Hearing it trying for so long without a response made it seem like a knife was being plunged into my chest repeatedly. It hurt so much that I hurt her. It hurt, so, so much.

I was already in my driveway but I turned right around and headed back to Queens, hell-bent on getting my apologies to her ears that evening. I felt like scum all the way back to her place.

I knocked at her door for quite a while before I heard her voice at the other end of the door.

“Who is there?” she sniffled. Hearing her sound like that broke something inside me and I felt even worse for being the reason she was that way. I was supposed to protect my Little not cause her this much angst.

“Hey, Baby. It’s me. I’m so so sorry I spoke like that. I’m deeply, truly sorry.”

There was silence from the other end of the door, just more sniffling. I felt horrible knowing she was sleeping and I could not comfort her because a door separated us.

“I know I messed up and said a lot of things I shouldn’t, but please… please, baby, just let me in, let’s talk this over,” I added when she did not respond to my prior sentence.

“I’d have but I’d like to think some things through first. I might need a bit of time and space to process things. My best friend is pregnant for my Daddy and it’s totally my fault. I need to make sense of this… it’s all my fault… I’m the stupid, stupid one…” her voice broke and was soon replaced with sobs.

When she finally spoke, I did not know how to feel. It was then I realized how much I must have hurt her.

CHAPTER NINE

Vanessa

A whole week passed and while I was not feeling as sick as I was feeling before, I knew something was totally off about my body system and it was hard pinpointing what.

A fleeting thought crossed my mind and I shook my head, trying to shake it off. I felt rather weird just thinking about it. The last thing I wanted is Oscar thinking I was being idiotic, so I dispatched the thought at the speed of light.

But I still felt sick. The symptoms were not even consistent. Fatigue, nausea, heart burn, sensitivity to light and smells, I was sleepy all the time, my breasts tingled and ached, vomiting, dizziness… the list went on and when I searched online what these could mean, what popped up one too many times made me very uneasy.

I did not want to give it more thought than needed but it kept bugging me so I decided to put it to rest, once and for all.

I shuffled to the drug store close to the office, trying to catch up on missed messages I had on my phone, most of were Oscar’s.

I mistakenly clicked on Cheryl’s message. What I saw nearly threw me off balance. I wondered why I did not open it all these while. I would have saved myself from a lot actually. A whole lot.

The druggy way the store smelled made me want to retch and show the world the burrito I had for lunch. I could not help but wonder why the smell of drugs in this store was a bit too much to bear.

I grabbed three of the DIY pregnancy from different brands, paid for it at the counter and located their bathroom. It was confusing when I saw two solid lines staring right back at me in the first trial. I put it back in the pack. I opened the other one with two windows, saw a test line in one window and a plus sign in the other.

My hands were shaking as I put the second one back in the pack. I manage to calm myself down a bit before calling Oscar to tell him I would be coming over to his later that evening.

All my preparations to go to his place were done with me being in a daze-like state. Fear, apprehension, confusion and happiness were just few of all I was feeling in that moment.
