"You really mean it?" I asked as I stared at him in shock and disbelief. "You really want to go out for dinner tonight?" He nodded in response.
"Or, if you're too busy tonight, we could always go tomorrow, he suggested hopefully. "Otherwise, I just want to spend time with you. I never got to officially meet you before the wedding, and I feel like I messed everything up by immediately thinking of your father instead of you." Touched by his concern, I considered this for a moment.
In all honesty, there was no harm in giving him a chance. After all, he had known my father pretty well, meaning my father had trusted him more than he trusted most people, which was more than enough for me. However I didn't think I was a Little.
Littles were immature and preferred stuffed animals in playrooms to libraries and being an adult. While I could admit that I hated being an adult, I wasn't sure if I was ready to cross the line between being a Little and being a woman. However, as he watched me expectantly, I realized that I should just give him a chance. Even though things have been awkward ever since the wedding, he at least deserved a chance to make things right.
"Alright," I finally agreed. "We can have dinner tonight." A smile spread across his face, and he nodded in response.
"What time should I pick you up?" he asked. Amazed at how gentleman-like he was acting, I thought for a moment before responding.
"How about at six?" I suggested. "That's when I get off work." He didn't hesitate even for a second.
"At six," he repeated back, confirming the details. "Sounds great. I will see you then." As soon as he had left, I went back to work, but all I could think about was how nice it would be to spend the evening with somebody, not be haunted by the massive empty home I was being forced to stay in.
After hearing that I would rather lose everything than go crazy staying one more night in that house all by myself, Derek had agreed to help me look for a loophole that would allow me to sell the house without having to stay the full thirty days. It had taken up most of the day, but, by the end of the work day, he believed that he had found something that would help. As we packed up for the day, he finally came to me to explain everything.
"I have some good news for you," he said with a gentle smile. "While you have to stay in the house for thirty days, you don't have to stay alone. You can have any number of guests or friends staying in the extra bedroom while you are staying at the house." Slightly annoyed at the fact that I had no friends that I could invite over, I rolled my eyes and shook my head.
"That doesn't exactly help my case," I informed him. "It's not like I have ten people who can come stay at the house with me for the next nineteen days." Thinking for a moment, he shrugged.
"You could always ask Oscar if he would like to stay with you for a while," he suggested. Immediately, I felt my cheeks burn red in embarrassment.
"Absolutely not," I protested. "I barely even know the guy." Raising an eyebrow at me, Derek shrugged once more.
"But you're going on a date with him," he reminded me. Embarrassed by his reminder, I groaned in annoyance.
"It's not exactly a date," I corrected him. "Consider it more of a business dinner." Not seeming to believe me, Derek laughed and shook his head at me.
"Tell that to Oscar," he remarked as he packed up his stuff for the day. "I'm pretty sure he's convinced that it's a date." Wincing, I look down at the desk, my stomach churning as I contemplated this.
"I don't know if I'm ready to date, though," I admitted to him. "Father was always so strict." Derek looked around the empty office before giving me a playful wink.
"That's why you would be the perfect Little," he whispered loudly across the room. "You need a Daddy who will love you and take care of you." Raising my eyebrow at him, I stared at him for a moment.
"Do you really think that Oscar would be a good Daddy?" I asked. Derek looked surprised at my question.
"Of course, he would be a good Daddy," he replied. "He's one of the best I know, and I would recommend him to any Little that deserves him." Remembering how Jasmine, Oscar's ex, had acted at the wedding, I sank into the chair and shook my head.
"Am I really what you would consider a Little?" I asked. Derek thought for a moment before nodding an agreement.
"You are what most Daddies would consider the ideal Little," he admitted. "You're short, beautiful, young, and you have a childish side, even if nobody's seen it yet. In all honesty, if I wasn't with Skye, I would try to win you over myself." Even though he had meant it as a compliment, I winced at how corny it sounded.
"Thanks," I told him awkwardly. "That helps a little." Realizing what he had said, he shook his head at me.
"You know what I mean!" he protested. "Trust me. Oscar really likes you and would be the perfect Daddy for you. All you have to do is give it a chance." After considering this for a moment, I shrugged and looked up at him.
"What exactly does a Little do for a Daddy?" I asked. Wincing, he backed away slowly.
"That's something that Oscar should explain to you," he began. "Every Daddy has different expectations for their Little, and it's better to have the perspective Daddy explain their expectations to you rather than asking for general expectations from any Daddy, especially one that is taken." Realizing he was right, I nodded in agreement.
"Very well," I said as I rose to my feet and looked at the clock on the wall. "I will talk to him tonight and see what he expects." Giving me a gentle smile, Derek gave me a thumbs up.
"Good for you," he told me. "Don't forget to tease him a little. A lot of Daddies really like it." I was about to ask what he meant when I saw Oscar's vehicle pull up in the parking lot. Deciding not to ask, I immediately set out towards the parking lot and went to meet Oscar.
